This study begins with the recognition of the need for the verification of the meaning and the role of the ‘length of an article’ in writing, while having an interest in the fact that the volume or length of an article directly affects my performance in writing, and in something related to it even when evaluating the quality of writing, in general. Also, the study aims to offer important implications for writing education by verifying the relationship between the length of an article and the quality of writing, and to offer the basic data for follow-up research concerned with the length of an article.
This study defined the concept of the length of an article, as a term of ‘compositional length’, so that it can include the total number of sentences and correctly written words sequence, a number of each part of speech in a broader sense, which enable the measurement of various factors related to the quality of writing, not as a ‘length of texts’ in a narrow and fixed sense, such as the total number of words or letters. Moreover, the study reviewed research into the contents of an article, vocabularies and paragraphs(sentences), general writing and word processor writing, and the evaluation method for the quality of writing, as a theoretical exploration regarding the length of an article. Based on this exploration, the study conducted longitudinal research by investigating the relationship between the length of an article and the quality by the grade of schools. For research, the study aimed at 35 Fifth graders in a combined class in Z Elementary School, 33 second graders in a combined class in X Middle School, and 39 students second graders in a combined class in Y High School located in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, and gave them an essay assignment as an emotionally expressive writing. The students worked on the assignment for 40 minutes, and their assignments were collected. As for the topics of essays, the study conducted survey research to their peers in the same grade in Seoul, and selected them by reflecting the interest of students. Fifth graders in elementary school were interested in ‘pocket money’, second graders in middle school in ‘leisure life’, and second graders in high school in ‘traveling’. Also, the researcher analyzed collected essays over three times, based on the measurement of ‘the total number of paragraphs and sentences’, ‘the total number of words and syllables’, ‘the mean number of sentences, words, and syllables in a paragraph’, and ‘the mean number of words and syllables in a sentence’. In addition, the quality of the essays was subject to a general evaluation method by 2 middle school Korean subject teachers and 1 high school Korean subject teacher with over 5 years experience. In order to ensure dependability among the evaluators prior to the general evaluation, the study performed evaluator training, and secured statistical dependability adequate for the evaluation.
The research found that the relationship between the length of an article and the quality of writing had a statistically higher correlation on all levels of schools. Also, fifth graders in elementary school and second graders in middle school had a higher correlation in the total number of paragraphs and sentences, whereas second graders in high school had a low correlation in the mean number of words and syllables in a sentence. This would mean that fifth graders in elementary school and second graders in middle school compose contexts by increasing the number of paragraphs and sentences, but second graders in high school compose contexts by elaborating the concept within sentences rather than increasing the number of paragraphs or sentences.
Moreover, as a result of conducting an independent sample t-test to see any significance in the length of an article by the level of school, there were significant differences on all levels of schools, in the total number of sentences, the total number of words, and the total number of syllables. Furthermore, there was also a statistical significance in the quality of an article between second graders in middle school and second graders in high school. Meanwhile, although there was no statistical significance, there appeared to be a substantive significance in the average number of words and syllables in a paragraphs between second graders in middle school and second graders in high school. This is because there was a difference of 10 words and 120 syllables on mean. These results demonstrate that second graders in high school used 1 word (3 syllables) in each sentence or 3 words in 2~3 sentences more than those of fifth graders in elementary school and second graders in middle school, and it obtained a substantive significance while being combined as one paragraph.
In sum, in this study, the length of an article was highly correlated with the quality of writing because not simply the contents of an article are rich due to lots of vocabularies, but the quality of writing was enhanced because the context-creating statement statements and conceptual elaboration have been well-made from the longer mean length of paragraphs and the longer mean length of sentences. This resulted from the fact that students experience writing practice and mastery concerning the arrangement and relationship between sentences, and paragraphs (small topic) and sentences (supporting sentence), through the elongation of an article. Also, concerning the conformity for measuring criterion the length of an article, word processor writing is highly practical and distributable as it enables the measurement of the quality of writing more simply and promptly.
