While I was a doctoral student in art history, I happened to take a course on American Still-Life Painting. At the end of the semester, I was quite surprised by a work called ‘Morning Calm’ which was quite similar to East Asian still lifes. From then on, I have been wondering what led some American artists of the late 19th century to depict Asian objects in their paintings, even when they had no chance to visit Asian countries. This paper is to examine William Merritt Chase`s studio paintings and investigate how Chase came to have interests in Asian artifacts and what meaning they had in his studio paintings. After Chase returned from Munich in 1878, he settled in New York, renting a large studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building, which he extravagantly decorated with objects he accumulated in Europe. According to Katharine Metcalf Roof, “Chase`s collecting impulse received a tremendous impetus in Venice...and he availed himself of these opportunities to acquire a number of valuable things, including pictures...brasses, old furniture and picture frames. Those he could not pay for he left behind to be afterward sent to America.” In fact, the vogue for lavishly decorated studios was an international phenomenon of the late 19th century. Chase`s collection would probably have served as props for paintings, inspiration, or aesthetic environment. His studio paintings, roughly produced between 1880-1886, portray his studio decorated with a large number of objects, including furniture, tapestries, jewelry, pictures, brasses, china, birca- brac, etc. Especially, the Brooklyn Museum`s painting 〈In the Studio〉 shows a extravagantly decorated studio where a female figure is surrounded by a considerable number of objects, which include Asian artifacts such as Chinese yellow silk portiere, a Chinese carpet, a Japanese brass pot, Japanese prints, Japanese flat fans, an Islamic carpet. Most scholars did give less attention to the studio paintings than the studio itself. In his 1976 essay “William Merritt Chase`s Tenth Street Studio,” for example, Nicolai Cikovsky, Jr. declares that the studio paintings are secondary to the studio itself. Recently, art historians have interpreted Chase`s studio paintings in a variety of ways. In his essay “Artifact as Ideology: The Aesthetic Movement in Its American Context,” Stein also asserts that “the luxuriousness of the space prepares...the viewer to be a connoisseur of art for art`s sake as a formal experience.” thereby regarding Chase`s studio as a direct product of the American Aesthetic movement. Sarah Burns in her essay “The Price of Beauty: Art, Commerce, and the Late Nineteenth-Century Studio Interior,” on ther other hand, sees his studio paintings as a “paradigm of the aesthetic commodity.” Annette Blaugrund also maintains that “Chase used his studio as the ultimate marketing tool” to promote himself and his aesthetic enlightenment. However, recent interpretations of Chase`s studio paintings fail to mention what role Asian artifacts played as a marketing tool, which would ultimately be the way to clarify the significance of Asian artifacts. In order to answer this question, it is necessary to examine American consumer culture in the late 19th century. The post-Civil War period witnessed the rise of big cities, the emergence of the modern business enterprise, and expansion of transportation. In the process, according to William R. Leach, American commercial capitalism created a set of symbols and enticements, which tuned into a commercial aesthetic of desire and longing. Especially, he explains the cause for the rapid spread of orientalism as a result of “the nearly overnight efflorescence of America`s new consumer industries, with their high distributive and marketing demands.” In this sense, the Asian artifacts in Chase`s studio can be said as evidence of ‘commercial orientalism’ as a marketing strategy which filtered into the heart of aesthetic sanctuary, the studio.
