The ordinary mind is Tao(平常心是道) is one of the representative phrases that express the very core of Ma-tsu Tao-i`s(馬祖道一, 709-788) Seon(禪, Ch`an, Zen) doctrines. It is tantamount to saying ``Tao is nothing but the ordinary mind of us.`` This proposition of Ma-tsu is as perplexing as a kung-an for us, because we regard Tao as something very special, transcendental and super-empirical. Although the term ordinary is tricky, at least it seems clear that what Ma-tsu calls the ordinary mind cannot be the same as our mind we activate in our everyday routines. What are the differences? What did Ma-tsu want to mean when he still chose the term ordinary? The purpose of thesis is to find out answers to those questions. To say the conclusion first, what Ma-tsu yu-lu(馬祖語錄) calls the ordinary mind is different, but not separate, from our ordinary mind. It is different from our ordinary mind in that it refers to Ma-tsu`s enlightenment itself and thus implies the very core of the Patriarchal Seon that was originated from Ma-tsu. In order to attain what Ma-tsu calls the ordinary mind, we need to overcome and go beyond the ``ordinary`` mode of our mind for an insight and intuition into the truth. We, unenlightened ``ordinary`` persons, do not have such an insight and intuition. Ma-tsu`s ordinary mind, however, is not completely separate from our ``ordinary`` mind that operates in our everyday activities. It refers to ``the mind as the origin of all dharmas`` on one hand, and also to our mind that operates in response to the outer world. Each individual person activates his/her mind in all the diverse modes in the milieu of his/her life. When Ma-tsu said The ordinary mind is Tao, he meant that our mind itself, in all the variety of modes in the midst of our lives, is what we should get enlightened to in our efforts for attainment of Tao. Here lies the revolutionary feature of Ma-tsu`s doctrine that cannot be seen in previous Seon masters` teachings. The two facets of Ma-tsu`s oridinary mind may be called, for convenience, ``the noumenal mind`` and ``the phenomenal mind`` respectively. ``The noumenal mind`` refers to the mind as the original truth itself. It is called ordinary in that sense. ``The phenomenal mind`` refers to the mind in samsara, i.e., in everyday lives of sentient beings. It is also called ordinary, but here in the sense of ``routine`` or ``of the ordinary (unenlightened).`` Seon is all about enlightenment. Enlightenment in turn is all about liberation from the grasp of or attachment to any frame of conventional dichotomous concepts. A concept is established depending upon its opposite, i.e., only when it is located in a dichotomous pair. ``Buddha`` for example is meaningless without ``sentient beings.`` The noumenal mind, or the mind of Seon enlightenment, likewise, is meaningless separately from the matter of the phenomenal mind, or the ordinary mind of ordinary people. These two facets of Ma-tsu`s ordinary mind thus can be understood in terms of ``t``i and yung``.
