I. This is another in the series of marital adjustment studies continued from the "Martial Adjustment of Urban Families" reported in vol. 21 and 22, Journal of Korean Cultural Research Institute. This study is aimed at revealing the structural characteristics of rural Korean families in terms of their task role, as well as their social-emotional role, in contrast with that of urban families.
II. The subjects were drawn from 111 households: out of that total, 55 households were from a village in Kyunggi-do and 56 households were from Choongchung-bukdo. By family pattern, there were 67 nuclear families and 44 extended families. In this paper, the definition of an extended family is defined as the family consisting of a husband, a wife and their children along with their blood relatives living together with them temporarily or permanently. Interviews and questionnaires were given to the subjects during the month of July, 1974.
III. The major areas of concern are:
1. The marital role structure of husband and wife.
Roles on domestic affairs, child-rearing, and education.
Roles on economic activities and external activities.
2. Social-emotional roles of husband and wife.
Dialogue between the spouses - through cooperative labor in the field.
Sexual Life
IV. Finding:
It was uncovered that the traditional family pattern still remains strong thus comprising the ratio of 60.4% nuclear families to 38.6% extended families in the investigated areas.
The husband's participation in domestic affairs, such as cleaning the house, is meager. The domestic affairs are mostly performed by the wives and their children, while those duties are taken care of by the house maids and wives in the city. 56.8% of the rural wives go to the market for shopping: in the village of Kyunggi-do more wives go; in the remote village in Choongchung-bukdo more men go than their wives, whereas shopping for the meals is one of the routine tasks of the wives in the city.
There is not much participation of husbands in child-rearing and education, while more positive participation of urban husbands is seen when the children reach the period of childhood.
Concerning economic activities, there is no clearcut role differentiation between husband and wife. The wife's cooperation is inevitable in the farm work because of the shortage of the labor power in the rural areas. In spite of the wife's great participation in production, serious economic affairs, such as loaning a big amount of money or deciding the subsidiary production of the year, os mostly handled by the husbands. This trend is more so in Choongchung-bukdo.
Social-external activities such as dealing with public institution is mainly performed by husbands, while it is a wives' job in most urban families.
Dialogue between the spouses is carried through working together on the farm all day long. They may not have recreation as the urban couples do, but they do have the recreation of a common home life.
Concerning sexual life, their room atmosphere is not appropriate for the evening life. Because of the room shortage, all children mostly sleep in the same room with their parents. The rural couples seem to have less sexual satisfaction than those of the urbanites. The most frequent reason for the sexual unsatisfaction is reported to be the excessive mental as well as physical fatigue, and it is a common phenomena both in the city as well as the rural areas.
Looking at the general marital satisfaction of the respondents, those in the top marital satisfaction categories comprised 52.2% of the total while the middle comprised 43.2%. There was a higher rate of satisfaction by the rural wives in spite of the more authoritarian factors of the husbands involved.
It might be said that the rural families still remain in the traditional stage, though they are beginning to change their pattern. The young in age, the more educated, and the more influenced by urbanization they are, the more they seem to faster facilitate the speed of change.
