Through lots of fights with friends, children expend their energy as well as gain it. Sometimes fighting amongst teams is a means of learning how to unite. Some of the brawls (Pyeonssaumnoli) expand to a larger level(Daedongnoli) than those in town. Yeongsan town in Changnyeong city, Gyeongnam province presents an ideal condition to observe how children participate in Daedongnoli (the larger level of team fighting) and how effective team fighting can be in achieving their community’s unity. Particularly, Yeongsan has two former types of Daedongnoli: Golmokjulssaum and Aeginamusossaum. This study explores how traditional team fighting in Yeongsan has been passed on to later generations and how children currently accept team fighting as a kind of play. Also, this study investigates some ways to restore the spirit of unity from team fighting which today’s society may require.
In the past children’s team fighting was not only fighting between teams but also having fun. These fights were inherited as children’s play and again their play was inherited as their fights. Progressively, lots of fun was added. However, since the period of Japanese occupation, team fighting stopped and now is simply understood as play. Although team fighting had been simplified and standardized for since it stopped sixty years ago, it has not disappeared. Now children learn formalized play as an educational activity and enjoy it as they learn. As time goes by, children cannot play the active parts of Sinmyeongpuli in their own style.
Traditional team fighting has been accepted as follows: children’s interest in the results of fights (victory or defeat) and pride in local cultures is discovered. Children compete with their rivals and struggle not to lose. They have positive and pleasant feelings regarding their local festivals. Particularly, as they grow older, they try to understand traditional cultures reflecting their local characteristics. Often, children hesitantly take part in the team fighting because of sexism and do not volunteer to learn how to play. There’s segregation between men and women and men are considered superior in team fighting play. Older children have less fun and react dependently and non-voluntarily. Also, the lack of recognition and realistic refusal towards the fights are often found. Most children don’t fully understand about the team fighting. Furthermore, some children are forced to learn and practice the team fighting play by adults. Therefore they make less creative and less autonomous playing rules. Children’s real interest is less than adults expectations. Occasionally children even refuse to play it.
As a result, efforts to recover the spirit of team fighting for unification should be made. It is insufficient to insist that we preserve our traditional cultures. The reasons why children should preserve the traditional play can’t be acquired when children are compelled to learn a type of play that came from agricultural society. There should be lots of fun, which the children can relish. Independence should be allowed in order to let children enjoy themselves. Independence is an essential part of discussing the spirit of unity. Children can play it without any protection or interruption of adults for themselves. To accomplish this, it is required that an environment be prepared as well as a cultural district for playing equipped with the traditional qualities of Yeongsan. There’s a saying ‘Children’s lining up is none of adult’s business, but of their own business. Even though an adult can cut in, he can’t interrupt the children.’ On the basis of this, plans and measures to increase the children’s fun and interest should be considered. It is necessary to designate Yeongsan as ‘a play district’ or ‘a play town’. In addition, offering administrative and financial assistance is required to improve the environment. Finally, it’s necessary to prepare an ecological environment so as to recover the spirit of unity
