필사본 「신계후전」의 이본 성격과 선본

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 ｢신계후전｣의 이본을 면밀히 대비하여 차이를 밝히고 선본을 확정하였으며, 이를 토대로 작품의 장르적 성격을 탐색하였다.
필사본 4종은 도입부의 임란 삽화, 낙엽 긁던 노인의 욕설 대목, 고씨에 대한 처벌 여부, 계후의 자식에 대한 서술 방식 등에서 차이를 보인다. ‘도입부의 임란삽화’는 임진왜란이 선조가 아닌 다른 왕 때 발발했고 신립이 임진강 전투에서 전사한 것으로 허구화되었다가 이화여대본에서 선조 때 탄금대 전투에서 전사한 것으로 바꾸어 역사적 사실의 왜곡을 바로잡았다. ‘낙엽 긁던 노인의 욕설 대목’은 유독 충남대본에서 낙엽 긁던 노인이 신계후와 권찰방에게 격한 욕설을 내뱉고 있어서, 충남대본 계열의 독자들이 권경애를 고난에 빠트린 두 인물에 대하여 강한 반감을 보였음이 확인된다. ‘고씨에 대한 처벌 여부’는 매우 다양하여 고씨를 곧바로 죽이거나(충남대본), 훈계하고 방면하거나(이화여대본), 용서하고 함께 살거나 박순호본), 경애의 자식이 고씨의 자식에게 복수하는(성균관대본) 등 서로 다른 결을 보였다. 그만큼 고씨에 대한 처벌 여부가 독자들의 큰 관심 속에서 논쟁거리가 되었음을 의미한다. ‘계후의 자식에 대한 서술 방식’은 ｢신계후전｣이 원래 적장자 중심의 삼대기적 구조를 기본으로 삼았는데, 유독 성균관대본에만 장자와 차자의 행적이 균형 있게 서술되어 있다. 이를 적장자를 우대하는 가족제도로 차별 받던 자들의 바람이 투영된 것으로 해석했다.
필사본 4종이 차이를 보이는 네 곳을 활자본의 해당 대목과 대비하였다. 그 결과 활자본은 이화여대본을 모본으로 삼은 것으로 확인된다. 그리고 이화여대본은 필사본 가운데 분량이 가장 많고, 디테일이 잘 살아 있으며, 필사본들이 차이를 보이는 주요 대목에서도 무리하거나 결함을 보이는 곳이 없다. 따라서 이화여대본을 ｢신계후전｣의 선본으로 규정했다.
선본으로 확정된 이화여대본을 대상으로 장르적 성격을 모색하였다. 그 결과 ｢신계후전｣을 전대 소설에서 익히 알려진 추노서사, 결연서사, ｢춘향전｣의 후반부를 적절히 결합하여 신계후와 권경애의 혼사장애 및 그 극복 과정을 핵심서사로 그려낸 혼성모방적 소설로 규정했다. 이에 따라 ｢신계후전｣을 추노소설로만 이해하려 한 기존의 단선적 시각에서 벗어나 다양한 관점에서 그 실상을 밝히기 위한 노력이 지속되어야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article determines the best version of the manuscript Singyehujeon by closely comparing the four versions of the manuscript. Based on the comparison, the article attempts to identify the characteristics of genre the manuscript displays. The results of the comparison are as follows.
The four types of manuscript display distinctive differences in four main areas: the imran illustration in the introduction, the vulgar language of the elderly man who was raking fallen leaves, the punishment of Mr. Go, and the descriptive method of the off-spring. The ‘imran illustration in the introduction’ includes an historical inaccuracy, suggesting that Imjinwoiran (the Japanese Invasion in the Year of Imjin) broke out under the reign of a king other than King Seonjo that General Shin Lip died in the battle at the Imjin-gang River. In the Ewha Womans University Version, the historical facts are corrected, reflected that General Shin Lip was killed in the Battle of Tangeumdae Battle during the reign of King Seonjo. In the Chungnam University Version the ‘vulgar language of the elderly man who was raking fallen leaves’ confirms that the elderly man used extremely vulgar language toward Singyehu and Gwonchalbang and that the readers of the Chungnam University Version line displayed strong antipathy toward the two people who pushed Gwon Gyeong-ae into the abyss of hardship. The ‘punishment of Mr. Go’ differs in the various versions. Mr Go is either killed instantly (Chungnam University Version), admonished and let go (Ewha Womans University Version), forgiven and lives together (Park Soon-ho Version), or is the off-spring of Gyeong-ae who takes revenge against Mr. Go"s off-spring (Sungkyunkwan University Version), and all of them have mutually different conclusions. As a result, the punishment of Mr. Go has become a topic of disputes among interested readers. The ‘descriptive method on knowledge’ is based on Singyehujeon being the legitimate first son-oriented Samdaegijeok structure, and only the Sungkyunkwan University Version includes a balanced description of the whereabouts for the first son and next sons. This is interpreted as reflecting the personal desire of people who were discriminated against the family system, where the legitimate first son is favoured.
As a result of comparing the four areas of difference between the four versions of the manuscript by highlighting the differences using the applicable categories of the printed version, the Ewha Womans University Version emerges as the model sample. In addition, the Ewha Womans University Version is the largest volume of the manuscripts, which includes fine details, and there is no display of unreasonable or defective areas even in the main categories where the manuscripts display differences. Therefore, the Ewha Womans University Version may be considered the best version of Singyehujeon.
Having established the Ewha Womans University Version as the best version, we attempted to identify the characteristics of genre. Singyehujeon appropriately combines from the earlier-generation novels with the well-known Chuno Narrative, Gyeongyeon Narrative, and the second part of Chunhyangjeon. It is also possible to classify the manuscript as a romantic novel with the core narrative of problems in marital affairs and the process of Singyehu and Gwon Gyeong-ae overcoming such issues. It is therefore possible to argue that it is necessary to break away from the current biased view that understands Singyehujeon purely as the Chuno novel in order to disclose its reality under various points of view.
