Van Buskirk, a medical missionary and Professor at the Severance Medical College, was responsible for the writing of publications on social sciences as a response to anti-Christian sentiments. Van Buskirk was able to incorporate the demands and interests of Joseon society into his writings through lectures and publications aimed at students, Christians, and the general public. The Joseon people involved in the Korean publication of works by medical missionaries included figures from the Severance Medical College such as Myeongseon Kim, as well as members of the Young Men``s Christian Association (YMCA), the Korean Religious Tract Society, and Donga Daily. From the late 1920s, Van Buskirk’s publications began to include the critical/self-searching opinions of Joseon Christians calling for the urgent “establishment of living conditions to implement knowledge on health.” His research and teaching experience at the Severance Medical College, coupled with the demands of the Joseon Christian community and the general public, gave birth to a number of publications. The process of comparing the issues that were addressed by medical missions and those that they needed to address offers an in-depth look into the religious and academic factors that contributed to the formation of modern knowledge in Joseon under colonial rule, as well as into the relationshipsbetween those factors. Once established, the definitions are expected to allow for a more solid and sophisticated comparison of “official healthcare under Japanese colonial rule” and “missionary healthcare”, two elements that competed for political hegemony.
