Recently, international marriages in multicultural families have been increasing quantitatively, and interest in the lives of married female immigrants is increasing. In the meantime, studies in the multicultural field of Republic of Korea have focused on the issues of married female immigrants in China and Southeast Asian countries, which are relatively many countries of origin. However, due to the specificity of the relationship between Republic of Korea and Japan, there is relatively little interest in Japanese married female immigrants who
have highly geographical and cultural similarities to Republic of Korea. International marriages between Koreans and Japanese have been steadily increasing since the independence of Korea, and it is expected that the adaptation issues of Japanese married female immigrants, which they have experienced due to the special
relationship between Republic of Korea and Japan, are actually causing special empirical issues different from those of Southeast Asian countries. It is an important issue that Japanese married female immigrants
show a low level of adaptation in Korean society. This result differs greatly from the general expectations of Japanese married female immigrants, who have cultural, social, linguistic similarities with Korean society even though they have relatively high political, economic, educational and cultural standards. In Korean society,
Japanese married female immigrants have been experienced cultural differences in their family and other human relationships, for example, the degree of heterogeneity in parenting methods, family events, and
family rituals is high. In the case of Japanese married female immigrants, it can be seen that Korean social adaptation and maladaptation stem from family problem-experience, culture, religion and values compared to married female immigrants from China or Southeast Asian countries. Japanese married female immigrants are experiencing many difficulties in forming relationships with Koreans due to maladaptation to Korean culture and social prejudice against them. In addition, Japanese married female immigrants with school-age children did not communicate well with school teachers, experienced discrimination, and felt a sense of social distance from their relationships with neighbors. Therefore, psychological and social support are needed to
understand and overcome the cultural differences and social distance issues in their lives, and to live as true members of Korean society without feeling alienated. The preceding studies on Japanese married female immigrants mainly help to understand the general phenomenon through quantitative research methods, and there is a limit to analyzing the essential contents of ‘Experience in adapting to Korean society and culture’ of Japanese married female immigrants and the contents of individual experiences. Therefore, this study aims to
identify and analyze the essential problems and causes of Japanese married female immigrants’ experience of cultural adaptation to Korean society and culture through a phenomenological research
method. The purpose of this study is to prepare support measures for stable settlement by understanding what Japanese married female immigrants have experienced in the process of social and cultural adaptation in Republic of Korea, what difficulties and conflicts they face, and how to overcome cultural differences with their motherland. In addition, I would like to discuss ways to support Japanese married female immigrants while respecting the cultures of both countries by considering the process of settlement in Korean society in depth,
which is experienced differently from married female immigrants from other countries, through this study.
To achieve the purpose of this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Japanese married female immigrants, and the results of the interviews were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological research analysis. As a result of the in-depth interview analysis, 15 themes were derived from meaningful statements about Japanese married female immigrants’ social and cultural adaptation experiences in Korean society, and they were organized into 6 categories. As a result of examining the social and cultural adaptation experiences of Japanese married female immigrants in Korean society, 6 theme groups were found, such as ‘A sense of
heterogeneity in Korean cultural differences’, ‘Exclusivity to Japanese culture’, ‘Experience of social adaptation as a stranger’, ‘Experience of cultural adaptation as a stranger’, ‘Mixture of two identities’, and ‘Living as an immigrant in Republic of Korea’. The 5 categories were again divided into the ‘Situational structure of the social and adaptation experience of Japanese married female immigrants’, ‘Living as an immigrant of Japanese married female immigrants and the phenomenon of adaptation to life and world experiences’, and ‘Identity
as an immigrant of Japanese married female immigrants’. The results discussed in detail are as follows.
Firstly, in the ‘Situational structure of the social and adaptation experience of Japanese married female immigrants’, the 2 theme groups were derived from, such as ‘A sense of heterogeneity in Korean cultural differences’ and ‘Exclusivity to Japanese culture’. The Experience of a sense of heterogeneity in Korean cultural differences’ showed in 3 themes (components), including ‘The burden of Korean culture putting family first’, ‘Difficulties in adapting to traditional culture’, and ‘Difficulties in adapting to food culture’ etc. In the theme
of ‘Exclusivity to Japanese culture’, it was expressed in 3 themes(components), such as ‘Hostility towards Japan’, ‘Fatigue as a Japanese’, and ‘Wounds from historical perception of Japan’. Secondly, in the ‘Living as an immigrant of Japanese married female immigrants and the phenomenon of adaptation to life and world experiences’, the 2 theme groups were derived from, such as ‘Experience of social adaptation as a stranger’ and ‘Experience of cultural adaptation as a stranger’. In the theme of ‘Experience of social adaptation as a stranger’, it showed in 3 themes (components), including ‘Interpersonal conflict’, ‘Discrimination and prejudice of
people around them’, and ‘Recognition of minorities in the community’. In the theme of ‘Experience of cultural adaptation as a stranger’, it appeared in 3 themes (components), such as ‘Providing customized educational programs’, ‘A sense of alienation due to emotional distance’, and ‘Difficulties in relationship with strangers’.
Lastly, in the ‘Identity as an immigrant of Japanese married female immigrants’, the 2 theme groups were derived from, such as ‘Mixture of two identities’ and ‘Living as an immigrant in Republic of Korea’. In the theme of ‘Mixture of two identities’, it showed in 2 themes (components), including ‘Mixture of Korean and Japanese culture’ and ‘Establishment of the identity of the community’. In the ‘Living as an immigrant in Republic of Korea’, it appeared as 2 themes(components), such as ‘Efforts to adapting a new society and culture’, and ‘Building relationships through acceptance of Korean society and culture’. Participants in this study are Japanese women who have married and moved to Korea after married to Korean men through matchmaking of religious groups or in marriage based on love, which are economically stable and have a high level of education and
culture compared to married female immigrants in Southeast Asian countries such as China and Vietnam. In the process of settlement in Korean society, they have been experienced a sense of cultural alienation as a stranger, a sense of alienation due to language communication problems, and problems with their in-laws and
community members. And, it turns out that they felt the most difficult to prepare food for ancestral rites and had the most conflicts with their mother-in-law and in-laws. Based on the results of this study, specific measurements to support the stable settlement of Japanese married female immigrants are as follows. Firstly, it is necessary to expand opportunities for them to actively improve problems and cultural differences in their
homes by understanding Korean traditional family culture and providing educations for their husbands’ active participation in household chores and for other cultures. Secondly, it is necessary to develop a language communication program specialized for Japanese married female immigrants led by the Korean government. Lastly, it is necessary to form social support through assistance for small groups of Japanese or exchanges with motherland friends or Koreans in the local community, and to establish a network to enable their
participation in the local community.
