인상주의 음악의 미학에 관한 고찰 = Impressionistic music from a aesthetical viewpoint

Launched by Claude Debussy in the late 19th century, the impressionistic music had dissolved the romantic music and became a turning point for the emergence of modern music. The main characteristic of the impressionistic music is that there is no emotional aspect in it. The impressionistic music, however, has unique aesthetics in itself, and it is the purpose of this article to find out how it is expressed by means of compositional techniques.
In impressionistic paintings, the outline of the object is described to be scattered as if it were illuminated by intense light. Debussy also thought the outline of the objest was functional harmony and he used suitable non-functional harmony, modality and unusual scales for each object in his works. In his impressionistic music, so-called sense of timbre is very important. The main ideas of impressionistic musical language stemmed not only from french music but also from exotic sources ; As french source impressionists favoured folksongs and heritage of Couperin and Rameau. And they had also great interests in other western rhythmes and melodies, spanish local color for example. They also expressed their own impressions or nostalsia by the music color from antiques of Egypt, Babylon and Assyria. In order to understand impressionistic music, we must understand the synesthesia of composer.
