The objective of the study was to find out the meaning of learning circle “Saang-Sa-Hwa” in life-long education by analyzing it. To achieve the goal, the following research questions were proposed.
First, how ‘Saang-Sa-Hwa’ is progressed?
Second, what is the dynamic factor of ‘Saang-Sa-Hwa?’
Third, how does ‘Saang-Sa-Hwa’ affect its participants?
To solve above research questions a Ethnographic Study was used and participation-observation, interview and analyzation of data were used for detailed technique. The target of study was 9 members of Saang-Sa-Hwa living in Jinju. The researcher is the member herself starting observation from March of 2009 as a tacit observer and acting as an active observer using a
field observing notes with consent from the members for 5 months from September 2011 to January 2012.
Saang-Sa-Hwa is an intensive learning circle with open and self-regulating structure. Gaining the membership varied from training for parents and teachers during their vacation, through the internet café and by introduction from existing members. The circle rule was not officially been set up and the meeting lasted for 3 hours once a week at night. A coffee shop was designated for the meeting through making friendship with the owner but the site varied time to time. The study objective of Saang-Sa-Hwa was on theories related to counseling. The study focused on enneagram also touching on emotional counseling. The leader was picked according to each chapter of teaching material and meeting centered on the leader.
The most important aspect of dynamic factor was a qualification of student. The members of Saang-Sa-Hwa were Homo Eeruditio who had passion for learning and they enjoyed life-long education. They participated with passion and learning process was dynamic and self-initiated.
The learning process seemed that life and learning were not two separate things but one. The members accepted club participation as a part of their life due to not being strict, open and permissive atmosphere. Based on sympathy, respect and trust the small meeting of around 10 led to mutual openness of each members. They were able to share the most intimate details of their life as they shared their feelings and friendship. The focus of study was not about studying theories but dealt with problems that were associated with life and they were able to enjoy the meeting as they implement them on their own and share them.
Another aspect of dynamic factor is a qualification of the leader. The capabilities of the leader was divided into factors as a ‘facilitator,’ ‘controller,’ and ‘cohesiveness.’ The leader of Saang-Sa-Hwa conveyed his prepared contents to the circle and the members got motivation to learn through the circle. The leader led study dynamics through open questions and giving assignments being open yet controlling distractions. Also the leader enhanced cohesiveness and bond among the members by planning events for widening communication and activities which everyone can participate.
The participants were able to see themselves reflected on someone else through the circle participation and experienced change of perception. This process repeated and accumulated leading to self-development and relationship with people who had difficulty in relationship improved as they become more positive. The knowledge and experience they gained were practiced in real life spreading to their homes and workplace, leading to the role of ‘prosumer.’
In Saang-Sa-Hwa, a form of natural group counseling appeared as they studied about counseling. The counseling technique was used in receptive and trusting atmosphere and personal growth was accomplished through dynamic exchange among the members.
Suggestions for the follow up study are as follow.
First, it is important to increase the depth of research to better understand about autogenous learning circle through searching for circles with various forms and themes.
Second, in future study, I hope for the leader of learning circle to encourage and motivate the formation of clubs by writing about their experiences.
Time cannot be felt easily but we can understand how we spent our time by looking at the changes. I think that one way of living un regretful life is by thinking about getting old and studying endlessly.
