This dissertation is focused on providing the basic materials for developing school health education by investigating health awareness behavior of the middle and high school students and analyzing the factors influencing on it. A survey was conducted by asking 1,009 boys and girls living in Taegu from August 20th to September 20th in 1998. It shows:
1. Of all the respondents, middle school students were 54.1%; girls, 52.2%; the third grade of middle school students, 33.9%; the students whose standard of living is in middle class, 86.6%, those whose parents have no jobs and others, 29.6%; those living in their own houses(not apartment houses), 56.6%.
The students who thought of their physical conditions as healthy were 42.2%; as not healthy, 5.8%. Of Those who were middle school students, boys the first grade of middle school, living in middle class, whose parents' jobs were agriculture, stock raising, forestry, and fisheries, daily laborers, and who lived in their own houses, the distribution of the respondents who thought of themselves as healthy was higher than other groups.
The respondents who regard their weight as normal were 67.3%; overweight, 18.3%; the weight under normal, 14.4%. And Of the students who were high school students, girls, the first grade of high school, whose living conditions were lower class, and whose parents' jobs were sales management, the distribution of them who regard themselves as overweight was higher than other groups.
2. Those who wash their hands after coming out of the toilet were 95.8%, and the percentage was higher in groups of middle school students, girls, the third grade of high school students, those living in middle class and living in their apartment houses than those in other groups. The respondents who wash their hands after coming back home were 79.5%, and rate was higher in groups of high school students, girls, and the third grade of high school students than those in others.
Of the respondents, 72.6% said they have meals three times a day, and 87.9% answered they don't take nutritional drug.
Smoking students were 10.2%, and the rate of students who smoke much was higher in groups of high school students, boys, the third grade of high school students, those living in lower class and whose parents' jobs were sales management than those in other groups.
9.7% of the students said smoking is not unhealthful or they don't have any idea about it. This rate was higher in groups of high school students, boys, and those living in high class than those in other groups.
24.8% said drinking alcohol is not unhealthful or they don't have any idea about it. The rate was higher in groups of high school students, boys, the third grade of high school students, those living in lower class and whose parents' jobs were teachers and engineers than those in others.
There were more non-smokers in happy families than unhappy ones, and 7.6% said inhalation of hallucinogen is not unhealthful or they have no idea about it.
3. 34.9% said the noise in the classroom affects their study, and this rate was higher in groups of those living in higher class. 73.5% of the students said they have good illumination; 26.5% said they have poor illumination. 29.9% said the height of their desks are low; 6.6% said high.
65.8% said they are not satisfied with the facilities for health promotion at school, and the rate was higher in groups of high school students, girls, the third grade of high school students, those living in lower class and living in apartment houses than those in other groups.
57.5% of the students said they are not satisfied with the nursing facilities at school, and this rate was higher in groups of high school students, girls, the third grade of high school students, those in lower class and living in houses than those in other groups.
30.9% said the most important ways of keeping their health are doing profit exercises(30.9%), leading regular lives(26.7%), sleeping sufficiently (18.8%), staying out of stress(15.1%), and having meals regularly(8.5%).
The rate of those who had the experience of taking health education was 68.8%, and this percentage was higher in groups of high school students, girls, and the third grade of middle school students than those in other groups.
67.1% said health education at school is necessary, and the rate was higher in groups of high school students, boys, the first grade of high school students, those living in lower class and living in houses than those in other groups.
Out of schools, they obtain their information and knowledge about health from radios(47.7%), books, newspapers, and magazines(29.7%), their parents and brothers(11.4%), their friends and neighbors(7.3%), and others(3.9%).
78.1% of the students said the teachers fit for conducting school health education are professional ones, and the rate was higher in groups of high school students, girls, the third grade of high school students, and those living in middle class than those in other groups.
In conclusion, systematic health education is necessary for those students whose minds and bodies are in the process of growing. Therefore, in order to strengthen school health education, it is urgent to put health education into school curriculum category, to train professional teachers for it, and to do efficient policy making.
