A survey on home deliveries was conducted from July 28 to August 29, 1974 toward 657 married
women of age group 20-x49 in 2 Myons of Hoengsung Kun, Kangwon Do.
This study was carried out to find, out the status of pregnancy and pregnancy wastage, surroundings
of home delivery, and prenatal and postnatal care, which were summerized as follows. A. Characteristics of women investigated
1. Age; The age structure of the investigated women was from 35 to 49, which was 70.3% of the total group. Average age was 38.6.
2. Education; They got a very low education that was usually 89.5% under the elementary school level.
3. Jobs;. 97.7% of the women was occupied in agriculture and their husbands job. was also same as theirs (76.6%)
4. Composition of family; Nuclear families were 63.9% and expanded ones 36.7%. B. Pregnancy, Pregnancy wastage and number of living children
1. Marriage: The average married age was 19.3, and women who got married the age from 16 to 21 were 73.4%, age at menarche showed 64.0% in age from 16 to 18(average 17.1 years)
2. Pregnancy experience: The women's average pregnancy experience was 4.99 times. (4-6times with 54.7%) The older the women were and the lower the education level became, the pregnancy experience was increased.
3. Pregnancy wastage; Pregnancy wastage was 80 and normal birth was 920 per 1,000 pregnancies; induced abortion 42, spontaneous abortion 27, and still-birth 6.
4. Number of living children; Average number of living children was 4.2 (sons 2.2, daughters 2.0) Women having more sons than daughters constituted 46.6%, those with equal number of sons and daughters 18.7%. and those with smaller number of sons 34.7%.
5. Complication during pregnancy; Experiences of complicaton during pregnancy were 72.2%. Nausea
was the most, and headache and edema were above 30%. C. Status of home delivery
1. Place: Most of the women delivered their babies at their husbands' houses (96.0%). Few people got a separate delivery room (7.6/00.- The good reason of home. delivery was with the economic problems.
2. Delivery attendants : Delivery attendan=e by medical personnel was nothing but 3.5%, single delivery 32.5% and 64% of the women got delivery attendance by non- medicals.
3. Cutting material of umbilical cord- and it's sterilization : Cutting with scissors was the most (59.5%), with scissors or sickle according to the baby's sex was 25.9%. only 5.9% of them cut it with materials sterilized.
4. Kinds of delivery sheet : Women who didn't use any kinds of sheet at delivery were 26.4%, and 30.6% of them used cement bag paper or vinyl sheet.
D. Status of prenatal and postnatal care
1. Prenatal care : Most of the women (95. 1%) never got any kinds of prenatal care.
2. Diet after delivery : After delivery the women ate seaweed soup mostly (74.4%), while 18.3% of them ate honey.
3. Rest time after delivery : 83.1% of the women came back to the normal status within a week.
