Temple Woonjusa located in Daecho-ri, Doam-myon, Hwasun, Chonnam district has been said to be founded by Dosun. But, actually Woonjusa was built in the 11th century at the earliest and Dosun lived in the 9th century, which means that such a tale in the 17C late Chosun was re-handed down. In spite of the fact, the story helps us understand the identity of Woonjusa with the first description of foundation of Woonjusa. This study reviewed how Woonjusa which had been almost ruined has still existed through Dosun’s Haengju Theory. According to Dosun’s Feng-shui Bibo, nature such as mountains and streams is a metaphor of a specific land topography, and when a specific site is not good with a defect in terms of Feng-shui, it should be repaired by building a temple, pagoda, statue of Buddha, or Dangkan in order to make up for the lack. Such Dosun’s Feng-shui Bibo was used at a national level with founding Goryeo dynasty and most temples were built based on the theory. But, the meaning of Bibo temple was weakened in the period of King Kongyang’s reign in late Goryeo, and the power of Buddhism got weakened under the policy of Worshipping Confucian-Suppressing Buddhism in Chosun dynasty. To make it worse, Jeongyujaeran (Japanese invasion in 1592) broke out in the middle of the process and Woonjusa was almost ruined. In spite of the ruin, Woonjusa managed to survive. What is important is Woonjusa contains the ideology of ‘patriotic spirit’. In late Chosun, epitaphs of eminent monks were compiled in a way to find the identity of Buddhism order. During the process, they compiled Dosun’s epitaph which showed the description that Woonjusa was founded for Bibo because of its geographical feature of a sailing boat. Haengju Theory was easy to accept as a context of ‘patriotic spirit’ in the period of a national or international crisis such as the 17th war, the enlargement policy towards the North, KyeongShin Great Famine. etc. In the 19th century, the perception of Haengju Theory was shared among monks in neighborhood temples and government offices, which led to building Yaksajeon. But unfortunately that got out of interest as there were no national support and individual activities amongmonks. Woonjusa was beginning to revive in the 20th century, with added tales related to a mysterious way of building the temple to Haengju Theory which described the background of building Woonjusa in terms of existing ‘patriotic spirit’. The tales were about a way of building mysterious Chunbul-Chuntops they could see rather than invisible ‘patriotic spirit’. It seems to have been related to inflow of tourists and income. Japan in the period of Japanese colonial rule enforced a policy to research Korean cultural heritage or sites and holiday designation. Such a policy led to increase of tourists, and there added an interesting story to Haengju Theory in the process for readers to attract their interest in Woonjusa as an attraction. As above said, Dosun’s Haengju Theory is not an answer to who built Woonjusa, but a review on how Dosun’s Haengju Theory has been changed and still existed.
