「NambaekwolIseong(南白月二聖)」 article contains a story of two saints named Budeuk(夫得) and Bakbak(朴朴) during King Seongdeok’s reign becoming Maitreya Buddha and Amita Buddha from practicing asceticism in Mount Baekwol (709), and how a Buddhist temple with statues of Maitreya Buddha and Amita Buddha was built during King Kyeongdeok to commemorate it (764). Normally, this article is understood as a tale of ‘two saints becoming Buddha,’ but as it is categorized as < Tapsang(塔像) >, it can be seen as a tale of building a temple and making a statue. Thus, in this thesis, characteristics of this tale and the flow of Buddhism in the period will be examined, by comparing the time of King Seongdeok’s reign, which is the background time period for the tale, and that of King Kyeongdeok’s reign, which is the time when the tale was recreated.
First, the location of where the two saints were practicing and the location of the south temple were compared, and they were both facing to the south of Mount Baekwol. It appears that people recognized it as the location of where the saints attained wisdom as the south temple was built, and naturally, the south of the mountain was emphasized. Ilyeon also titled it [South Baekwol], which shows that he considered this tale as a creation tale of the building of south temple. This is why he has included this tale under < Tapsang >.
With the building of south temple, Maitreya and Amita Buddha statues were placed, which also recreated the tale that the two saints have become Maitreya and Amita Buddha. However, while Amitabha faith has continuously stayed popular since 7thcentury, Maitreya faith became more popular in the 8thcentury, particularly during King Kyeongdeok’s reign. Maitreya was placed higher than Amita Buddha as Maitreya Buddha’s statue was placed in the Golden Hall where as Amita Buddha’s statue was placed in the mainhall, and this is arefelction of Maitreya faith during King Kyeongdeok’s reign. Thus, this tale shows the transition of Shilla’s Buddhism from Amitabha faith to Maitreya faith.
