This study is divided into two parts. In part A, H₃O+-β"-aluminas were fabricated using ion-exchange process. In part B, various β"-alumina / Nafion composite membranes were fabricated using a solution casting method for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). and analyzed high temperature properties.
In part A, H₃O+-β"-aluminas were synthesized by hydrothermal process in the autoclave, using K+-β"-aluminas and acetic acid (10 wt. %) as a precursor and an ion exchange medium, respectively. The potassium concentration of the precursor were varied within the molar ratio range, [K₂O] : [Al₂O₃] = 1 : 4 ~ 1 : 8, and the acetic acid contents were chosen at the ratio of [K₂O] : [CH₃COOH] = 1 : 10, 1 : 50, and 1 : 100. The exchange reaction was carried out at 150, 170, and 200 ℃ for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 24 h. By repeating a 2 hour reaction twice, the first reaction followed by washing, the highest rate was able to be observed at above 90 %. The phase stability and transformation was confirmed by XRD and IR spectrum, and the ion exchange (rate) was analyzed by ICP and TGA.
In part B, β"-alumina / Nafion composite membranes were successfully fabricated using the solution casting method for PEMFC. The ion types of β"-aluminas are H₃O+-, NH₄+-, and K+. Three different schemes of experiments were conducted. In scheme Ⅰ, synthesized β"-alumina powders were followed into Nafion dispersion. In scheme Ⅱ, β"-aluminas slurry in methanol solvent using attrition mill were followed into Nafion dispersion for small size of fillers and homeogenous dispersion. In scheme Ⅲ, extensive studies were conducted using a mixture of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent to make casting process at high temperature possible, following the evaporation of alcohol in Nafion dispersion, redissolving of alcohol-free Nafion dispersion with DMF, dispersion of β"-alumina powders into Nafion solution. The thickness of the all composite membrane was approximately 80 - 120 ㎛. The morphology of the composite membrane have been investigated using SEM. The composite membrane and fillers of various type were analyzed using by XRD. The thermal stability of the composite membranes were also investigated. The chemical properties of composite membranes were investigated. ; proton conductivity, methanol permeability, proton selectivity, water uptake.
Based on Nafion 115 and composite membranes, membrane electrode assembly (MEA) were fabricated by spray method using a mixed slurry of Nafion solution and the prepared Pt / C catalysts for anode and cathode, respectively.
In case of using as-received Nafion dispersion, the experimental results clearly show that the proton conductivity of composite membrane containing H₃O+-,β"-alumina was slightly higher than that containing NH₄+-, and K+.-β"-alumina at low and high temperature. The composite membrane containing slurry type filler was slightly higher than powder type filler. In case of using a mixture of DMF as the solvent, the proton conductivity dropped with increasing β"-alumina..
Though the proton conductivity of the composite membrane are reduced slightly than that of Nafion membrane, the methanol permeability decreased with increasing the content of β"-alumina in the composite membrane. The lowest methanol permeability was about 7.0 × 10-7 ㎠ / s when 20 wt. % filler contents using DMF solvent. The methanol permeability decreased with increasing the content of β"-alumina content and had better than that of Nafion 115. at high temperature (40 ℃, 60 ℃). Therefore, β"-alumina / Nafion composite membranes are very prospective for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). In order to increase the proton conductivity and decrease the methanol permeability of composite membrane, this study strongly suggest that β"-alumina with small crystal size and homeogenous dispersion.
The proton selectivity of composite membrane containing 20 wt. % H₃O+-,β"-alumina powder / slurry filler have a highest effect. it is seem that the characteristic factor of β"-alumina / Nafion composite membranes was much higher than Nafion 115.
The performance of the MEA made using composite membrane was lower than that of normal membrane at operating temperature (80℃). In future study, the performance of the MEA should improve at high temperature (≥ 100 ℃).
