The purpose of this article is to analyze the spread of blue and white porcelain in the late Joseon Dynasty through the archaeological layer of the ruins around Jongno, Seoul, and to examine the background in the context of the times. Existing studies on blue and white porcelain in the late Joseon Dynasty were conducted mainly on literature records, transmitted, and relics collected from some production sites, and studies using archaeological excavated cases were lacking. In this regard, this paper reviewed the spread of blue and white porcelain by classifying the period of the cultural layer by comparing it with the artifacts excavated from the Royal kiln(Gwanyo) operated as an official kiln at the time based on the blue and white porcelain excavated by archaeological layer. In addition, the background of the increase in production of blue and white porcelain was examined through demand and production technology.
In the Jongno area of Seoul, as a result of the last request for request in this area during the Joseon Dynasty, blue and white bags made in the 18th and 19th centuries were identified in the Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ layers, which were the cultural layers of the late Joseon Dynasty, and many were collected in the Ⅱ and Ⅲ layers. The types of blue and white porcelain are everyday utensils, such as feet, cups, and plates, and the patterns are decorated in various ways, such as the Chinese characters '壽' and '福', flower patterns, and flower patterns. Among them, ‘壽’ and ‘福’ characters have different characteristics, such as handwriting and original text, for each layer. As a result of comparing and analyzing the excavated blue and white porcelain with Geumsa-ri and Bunwon-ri gist, which were operated as government kilns at the time, Tier Ⅱ is mainly of the Bunwon-ri style, with a thick, diagonally curved wall and a vertical bend with the inside of the heel cut deeper than the outside. In layer Ⅲ, the appearance of a golden sari with a sense of volume on a thin wall and the shape of a vertical heel with the inside of the heel cut deeper than the outside, which is the early Bunwon-ri style, are confirmed at the same time. The IV layer is characterized by a thin wall and a hallux valgus. Looking through the above, layer II can be divided into the 19th century and the Japanese colonial period, layer III from the mid-18th century to the late 18th century, and layer IV from the 17th to the mid-18th century. Eventually, the production of blue and white porcelain resumed after the mid-17th century, but the full-scale production began in the mid-18th century in connection with the times, such as commercial development. In the 19th century, the production of blue and white porcelain reached its peak.
The reason for the increase in the production of blue and white porcelain in the 18th and 19th centuries is that the demand for blue and white porcelain increased more than before due to the development of commodity-money economy. With the permission of the Sabeon(私燔), high-quality porcelain such as blue and white porcelain were widely distributed in large quantities on the market. As the demand for blue and white porcelain increased day by day, Gwanyo attempted technological changes. First of all, as blue dye, the pigment of blue and white porcelain, became easily available. On the other hand, production techniques such as gab-bal(匣鉢), firing technique, and the foot style changed over time. In the period of Geumsa-ri and Bunwon-ri, a new type of gabbal appeared, and during the period of Bunwonri, it was possible to produce a larger amount of blue and white porcelain than before by stacking the gabbal on top of each other. In addition, depending on the yangjil(high quality) and jojil(rough quality) of the white porcelain, the foot style became ambiguous, and the quality of the yangjil white porcelain, such as the use of raw materials, declined, but this can be seen as an effort to increase productivity...
