천서(天書)인가 인서(人書)인가 - 도교 경전의 특수성과 대중화 문제에 대한 소고 - = A Study on the Characteristics of Daoist Scriptures and their Transmission and Popularization

대략적으로 도교의 경전관은 크게 두 가지로 대별해 볼 수 있다. 우선 경전이란 계시에 의해 세상에 전달된 天書이며 우주창생과 보편구제의 힘을 가진 聖物이라고 믿는 관점이 있다. 그리고 이와는 달리 경전이란 道를 체득하고 세계의 참된 본질을 파악하는 데 보조적인 도구로서, 그것과 진리 그 자체는 구별해야 함을 강조하는 경전관이 있다. 전자의 경우는 주로 위진남북조를 중심으로 유행하던 경전관으로서 경전의 절대적 권위가 인정된다. 특별히 이러한 경전관은 유교나 불교와 차별되는 가장 도교다운 관점이라고 할 수 있다. 후자는 송대 이후 삼교합일적인 특성을 가진 개혁도교를 중심으로 나타나며 특히 金元시기의 全眞敎와 내단분파의 문헌에서 두드러지게 나타나는 경전관이다. 이 경우 언어와 문자의 한계를 강조하며 경전 자체의 신적 유래나 절대적 권위를 인정하지 않고 경전을 인간적 산출물로 여긴다.
경전관에 따라 경전의 작성, 그리고 전수와 보급의 양상이 달라진다. 경전을 天書로 인식하는 경우에는 경전을 엄격하게 취급하여 자격을 갖춘 이들에게만 비의적으로 전수하거나 교단의 엄격한 계율과 의례를 거쳐 전수한다. 이러한 경우 경구의 상당부분이 상징과 비유를 사용함으로 해독이 어렵다. 따라서 경전 자체뿐 아니라 주석 역시 일반적인 공유의 대상이 되기 어려워 도교전문가들의 전유물일 수밖에 없다. 두 번째 경전관이 부상하는 북송시대 이후에는 주로 개인의 자력적인 수행을 중시하는 내단전통과 민중도교의 흐름이 공존하는데 경전의 자격을 부여하는데 엄격하지 않아 내단문헌과 대중적인 권선서, 주술적인 道法에 관한 문헌 등, 다수의 문헌이 도교경전 안으로 편입되며 심지어 유교와 불교의 경전도 다수 포함된다. 그리고 경전을 인간적 깨달음의 산물, 곧 人書로 취급하므로 경전의 전수와 보급이 용이하며 경전의 경구가 교육과 학습, 이성적 논의의 대상이 된다. 金元시대 全眞敎의 경우 道觀에서 도사들이 집단적으로 경전을 학습하고 토론한다. 또한 경전에 대한 자율적인 재해석과 경전의 재창출을 허용하는데 이러한 태도는 송대 이후 도교의 고유한 특색이라고 평가된다.
그러나 북송 이후에도 분파에 따라 天書로서의 경전관, 그리고 경구의 주술적 힘에 대한 강한 신앙을 강조하고 비의적 전수를 중시하는 경향은 계속 이어져 왔다. 도가 가지는 초월적인 차원은 신적 계시에 의해서만 인간에게 공개되고 접근될 수 있다는 믿음이 여전히 도교전통 안에 내재하였던 것이다.
도교경전의 대중화 혹은 대중적 보급은 두 가지 차원으로 진행된 것으로 설명할 수 있다. 우선 비의적으로 전달되어 소수의 도교전문가들 사이에서만 통용되던 경전이 지식계층의 도사집단이나 신도집단에게 전달되고 교육되는 대중화의 차원이 있고 일반 평민계층에게 경전이 보급되는 대중화의 차원이 있다. 전진교의 경우 도사들 대상의 집단적 경전강의나 평신도 집회에서의 경전교육이 일상적으로 이루어졌지만 그것은 일반 평민을 대상으로 한 것이 아니라 지식층을 중심으로 한 것이었다.
이와 다른 차원의 도교경전의 대중화는 북송 이후 민중도교를 중심으로 진행되었다. 다양한 勸善書 들과 같이 지식이 없는 일반 평민들도 쉽게 접근하고 이해할 수 있는 대중적 도교문헌들이 작성, 보급되었다. 그러나 이 경우에는 보급, 공유되는 경전의 종류와 수가 매우 제한...
The view of scripture, i.e. attitude toward authority of scripture or standpoint as to interpretation of scripture, varies from religious tradition to religious tradition. Even within the same religious tradition, the view of scripture may be determined by era and religious denominations. It is noteworthy that Daoism does not have standard view of scriptures itself.
The characteristics of Daoism, i.e. a religion of interwoven complexity and high flexibility, are reflected on formation and understanding of its scripture. Daoist Canon, a massive accumulation of texts, is a collection of numerous texts with far-reaching diversity. All in all, scripture of Daoism may be characterized by diversity and flexibility.
It would be worthwhile to identify a common factor behind consolidation of numerous Daoist texts of such diversity into one. It can be derived that Daoist texts are based on the metaphysics and cosmology centered on Dao and Qi (i.e. Breath, or Energy). The cosmology, involving a process starting from Dao(i.e. the One, the matrix of the whole universe) to creation of a myriad of things via a medium of Qi serves a framework to build a fundamental structure for religious practices of Daoism. Daoist endeavors to revert the process of such creation (i.e. from a myriad of things to Dao) as part of effort to reach the mystical union with Dao. The mechanism involving creation of all things based on Dao and Qi and circulation thereof serves as a fundamental basis to support all the doctrines and facilitate religious practices of Daoism. With a common theoretical framework, each denomination of Daoism documented its own texts and the view of scriptures during a particular time period while other denomination pursued its own way.
We can find two different views on Daoist scriptures as follows: First, a group of traditions, such as Shangqing Tradition, Lingbao Tradition and Celestial Masters Tradition, deems scripture to hale a divine origin and power. Such traditions recognize that scriptures are literal expressions of Dao and believe that scriptures are sacred things which manifest the Sacred itself and possess sacred power themselves. Such scriputres are believed not to be works written by humans but revelations by gods as the messengers of the Dao. So, absolute authority is granted to scriptures in cases of such traditions.
In contrast, a group of Inner Alchemy traditions such as Quanzhen Tradition places heavier weight on a practical value of scriptures than absolute authority thereof. The underlying concept is that scripture is something that presents a gateway to Dao but distinguished from Dao itself due to its inherent limitations as it is structured in character letters of a human. In this regard, scripture may be treated as auxiliary means to accomplish religious goals. The practices of adepts are stressed more than reliance on teaching of scripture. Different attitudes toward scriptures may be interlinked with understanding of character letters or languages. Furthermore, it may have an inter-linkage with understanding of salvation whether to be fulfilled via divine power or own efforts exerted by a human.
The views on scriptures have an influence on the transmissions and propagation of scriptures. In case of traditions such as Shangqing School and Lingbao School that regard the scriptures as sacred things, the scriptures are transmitted in esoterical forms very cautiously. Therefore, the propagation of scriptures are not easily achieved. On the contrary, Daoist schools such as Quanzhen school transmit and propagate the scriputures freely because they see scriptures just as human works not revealed by deities but witten by humans.
In conclusion, authority and status of Daoist texts differs from one to another, lacking consistency. In comparison with other religious traditions, Daoism permits free and flexible interpretation of scriptures. Free interpretation of scriptures even led to variation and recreation of scriptur...
