Recently, the world’s attention to the prevention of global warming and low carbon green growth has been increasing. Research and development of transport means to connect not only between cities in one country but also between cities in difference countries have been actively conducted. Among those, representative transport system is superspeed magnetic levitation railway.
Currently, superspeed maglev railways are developed or under development in countries such as Germany, Japan, China, and South Korea. The vehicle developed by Germany is called Transrapid and all tests related to this vehicle such as operation, railway, propulsion, and electric power tests have been completed in Emsland test line in Germany. This technology was used to construct the commercial line that connects between Pudong International Airport in Shanghai and Longyang Road Station.
Japan has developed MLX(Maglev Experimental) system and this system is under running tests in Yamanashi. The test line was extended to 42.8km in 2013 and will be connected from Tokyo to Nagoya by 2027 for commercial operation. In South Korea, the development of core technologies of superspeed maglev railway has started as national research and development project and finished in March 2015.
For successful implementation of large system development projects such as superspeed maglev railway technology development, the development of technologies in diverse areas such as propulsion, electric power, vehicles, and operation should be implemented without any error. If an abnormality occurs in a sub system or part, the technology development will fail.
Since these countries are unwilling to disclose the technologies possessed by them to the outside, there are limitations in finding out detailed information on systems, sub systems, on parts and concrete information on cases of application of system engineering and instrumentation systems. In addition, in the case of vehicles for development that are not commercial vehicles, the size of vehicle should be reduced due to limitations in study periods and development costs. Furthermore, although the design, fabrication, and performance evaluation are conducted considering commercialized vehicles, there are difficulties in applying all details as they are to vehicles for development.
In South Korea, a study to develop an superspeed maglev railway system began in December 2011 as a national research and development project and terminated in March 2015. To develop the large system as such, patent analyses were conducted first. Through the patent analyses by country, by technology, etc., the following analysis results were obtained.
First, with regard to patent trends by applying countries, it is found that the USA posses the largest number of patents related to superspeed maglev railway systems(185 cases, 30%), followed by Japan(160 cases, 26%), and China (122 cases, 19%). South Korea was identified to have applied for the smallest number of patents with 48 cases (8%). Since the ratios of patent applications of the USA and Japan are the highest, it can be seen that preoccupying the market in these two countries is important. In general, it could be seen that the qualitative level of patents of the USA was the highest and that market competitiveness was led by Germany and Japan.
Second, with regard to patent trends by technology, the number of patents applied in 1980 was small with 2 cases and that in 2007 was the largest with 58 cases. Since the investigation indicates that patent applications increased drastically in the 1990s and from the middle of the 2000s, the importance of superspeed maglev railway systems seems to have been reflected on patent applications.
Third, the qualitative level and competitiveness of technologies were analyzed and it was identified that Germany had the most excellent superspeed maglev railway technologies.
Fourth, to analyze competitiveness levels of countries by technology, patents applied for in the USA were analyzed. The leading group with the highest technical competitiveness consisted of the USA and Germany and countries with higher than average market securing indexes were Germany and Japan. The USA, Japan, and Germany showed higher than average citation rates indicating that research and development markets in these countries had been matured.
Fifth, it could be seen that since linear synchronous motor design, levitation, and guiding technologies cannot be easily entered because the levels of difficulties of those technologies high, development should focus on enhancing price competitiveness through domestic independent technologies or cost reduction.
Sixth, the guide way technology used in superspeed maglev railways is changing into steel, hybrid, and concrete types. Therefore, referring to the newest technologies, design, fabrication, and test/evaluation technologies for guide way models unique to South Korea should be developed.
Meanwhile, in the process of development of core technologies for superspeed maglev railways, the application of system engineering techniques was very helpful in securing the reliability and stability of the entire system. The details are as follows.
First, the traceability of sub system requirements and component requirements for system requirements could be identified to find missing parts and improve the reliability of the system.
Second, since the entire system was addressed, data and diagrams that would enable the researchers to consistently understand even other areas not under their charge could be presented and wrong understandings of technical matters in other areas could be corrected to minimize technical risks.
Third, system verification should be performed based on system requirements in principle. The completeness of system verification could be enhanced by identifying test items and connecting traceability based on the data on system requirements, sub system requirements, and requirements constructed in the system engineering database.
In addition, to verify integrated performance, the total instrumentation system of superspeed maglev railways was composed of land power, track, vehicle, signal/communication/environment, and total instrumentation systems. Using the total instrumentation system composed as such as separate measuring devices, combined tests and general trial run tests were conducted to obtain the study results as follows.
First, to verify propulsion system combination tests, the inverter, converter, and energy storage device were combined and tested. It could be seen that the DC link voltage was DC 900V and the DC current was 100A. It was identified that the DC link voltage and current, torque current reference value, and feedback current were working normally.
Second, through thrust tests of LSM single units, the progresses of theoretical values and measured values of LSM according to changes in the input current and the position of the levitation electromagnet were reviewed. The thrust was identified as 5.58kN, higher than the required thrust 5.13kN. An error of approximately 5.7% occurred and this is considered attributable to the friction loss between the levitation electromagnet and the LM guide and the applied current measurement error. Since the required thrust was within the maximum thrust based on the foregoing, the design feasibility was verified.
Third, maximum thrust tests were conducted and 24.88kN could be obtained as the maximum thrust that was higher than the design value 23.7kN. Since the obtained value is similar to the design value 23.7kN, it could be seen that the LSM was designed and fabricated close to the design. Fourth, maximum speed vehicle propulsion tests were conducted and a maximum vehicle speed of 8.45m/s could be obtained which was higher than the design value 8m/s.
Fifth, whereas the maximum targeted acceleration/deceleration speeds of super -speed maglev railway vehicles using LSM propulsion systems are 1.1m/s2 respectively, the acceleration and deceleration values were shown to be 1.16m/s2, higher than the reference value. Sixth, a vehicle magnetic flux position estimator was developed so that the LSM could be more precisely controlled.
As reviewed above, to successfully develop a large system, domestic/foreign patents and technologies should be analyzed first. In addition, during the study period, the design, fabrication, and tests of the system, sub system, and components should progress without any problem. To successfully complete the large scaled research and development within scheduled period and costs and more than 100 participants, clear strategies for technology development should have been prepared. Based on such necessity, the R&D management strategy for development of superspeed maglev railway technologies was actually applied to the project to successfully complete the project.
In future, measures to apply the system engineering computerization support environment and comprehensive instrumentation system construction cases currently developed to the development of technologies for low-medium speed magnetic levitation trains and other vehicles should be reviewed. Furthermore, when implementing large national research and development projects, the R&D management strategy studied here should be revised and supplemented to fit individual projects and actively utilized in the projects.
