김승옥 소설의 문화기호학적 연구 = A Cultural Semiotic Study of Kim Sung-ok's Novels

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 김승옥의 소설 텍스트를 문화기호학적으로 새롭게 해석하려는 데에서 출발한다. 문화기호학을 바탕으로 하여 소설 연구를 위한 통합적 방법을 수립하고 이를 통해 김승옥 소설 텍스트를 구조 분석하고, 이 분석 결과를 당대의 세계관이나 사회문화적 구조적 맥락과 관련지어 김승옥 소설의 약호를 해독하며, 나아가서 그의 소설의 가치를 평가하고자 한 것이다. 이러한 연구 목적과 의도를 성실히 수행하기 위해서는 소설이 갖고 있는 형식과 의미, 내적 구조와 법칙의 분석이 선행되어야 한다. 또한 소설은 언어를 질료로 하므로 김승옥 소설 텍스트의 약호를 찾아 그 약호를 해독하고 그것들이 서로 관련을 맺고 있는 법칙과 구조들을 밝혀야하며, 이를 바탕으로 김승옥 소설 텍스트만이 지니고 있는 미학적 가치를 추출해야 한다.
이같은 과정에서 부딪치는 첫 번째 문제는 의미 해석에 관한 문제이다. 문화기호학이 텍스트의 산출자와 수용자 사이에서 또 다른 메타 텍스트를 산출하는 과정이라 할지라도, 수용자의 머리 속에 떠오르는 무수한 해석을 객관적 준거 없이 자의적으로 재단하고 해석할 수는 없다. 가장 개연적인 가설을 추론하기 위해서는 해석의 법칙과 준거가 명확히 제시되어야 한다. 이에 필요한 것이 의미화 작용의 법칙과 약호화의 원리이다. 그러므로 김승옥 소설 텍스트에서 '자기 세계'라는 개인의 정체성 탐구의 약호화 원리는 당대 사회문화 체계와 세계관의 구조와 무관하지 않다. 언어 기호의 체계, 언어 기호를 기반으로 한 예술 텍스트의 체계, 체계의 체계인 세계관과 문화의 체계는 상호 작용한다. 이는 의미와 약호의 해독을 올바르게 수행하려면 먼저 세계관과 사회 문화 체계와 관련시켜 해석하여야 함을 의미한다.
소설 텍스트 속의 작중 인물들은 삶의 평형을 유지하기 위해 세계의 분열에 대응하여 조화를 이루고자 한다. 특정의 시대에는 특정의 대응 양식이 있다. 1960년대라고 하는 시대적 배경하에서 전쟁 체험의 객관화, 반공 이데올로기의 가시화, 저항문학의 등장 등은 그 시대의 공동적인 대응 양식들이다. 따라서 김승옥 소설 텍스트의 의미를 올바르게 해독해내려면, 당시 세계의 약호화 원리를 정확하게 분석해야 하는 것이다. 이는 세계의 분열을 거부하고 삶의 평형을 얻고자 취한 대응양식의 총체로서의, 당대 세계관과 기호 체계의 체계로서의 문화를 재구해야 함을 뜻한다.
그러므로 본 논문은 먼저 문화기호학이라는 방법론을 통해 김승옥의 소설 텍스트를 하나의 텍스트로 놓고 당대 사회문화의 배경 속에서 그 의미와 구조, 미학을 밝힘을 목표로 하였다. 즉 사회문화적 맥락 아래 텍스트 산출자가 어떻게 세계를 표명하고 이를 약호화 하였으며, 또 수용자는 이를 어떻게 해독할 수 있는지 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 텍스트에 나타난 기호와 약호의 의미화 작용을 이론에 따라 분석하고 이를 발신자와 수신자의 측에 따라 해석한다는 점에서는 기호학이며, 기호와 약호를 공시적으로 해석하는데 그치지 않고 사회문화와 세계관의 틀 속에서 해석한다는 점에서는 문화기호학이다.
그러나 문화기호학을 주된 방법론으로 적용하되 자칫 무수한 해석을 객관적 준거없이 자의적으로 해석하게 되기 쉬운 문화기호학의 문제점을 보안하기 위하여, 텍스트를 분석할 때 내적 구조와 약호를 찾는 입장은 구조주의적인 방법을 차용한다. 이를 통해 텍스트의 의미와 메시지, 가치와 미학 등을 탐구하여, 텍스트의 내적 분석에서 문화적 맥락의 분석으로 향해 나가는 방법을 택하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 논지에서 의미작용의 기호학과 소통의 기호학을 통합하여 기호학 모델을 제시한 에코의 모델을 기본틀로 전제하고, 지금까지의 논의를 종합하여 문화속에서 텍스트의 기호를 분석하는 하나의 모델을 제시해 보았다.
따라서 I장에서는 문제 제기 및 연구 목적을 제시하여 선행 연구들을 유형화시키고, 문화기호학이라는 소설 연구 방법론을 함께 제시하여 이후 본 논의에서 전개될 방향과 김승옥 소설 텍스트 분석 방법을 개괄적으로 살펴보았다. II장에서는 문제 접근의 용이성을 도모하기 위하여 그의 소설을 전기와 후기로 나누어 분석하였다. '자기세계'를 추구하며 주체를 정립하는 과정을 살피고, 이같은 '자기세계'의 추구를 통한 주체 정립의 문제가 김승옥 소설에 있어서 가장 중요한 약호로 작용함을 알아보았다. 즉 이 장에서는 김승옥 텍스트에서 이같은 '자기 세계'라는 약호가 어떻게 작품의 주제나 작가의식 그리고 사회문화들을 예술적으로 형상화하고 있는지를 밝혀내려 하였다. III장에서도 역시 편의상 그의 소설들을 전기와 후기로 나누어 '자기 세계'와 '생활'이 어떻게 갈등하고 지향하게 되었는지 변모의 양상을 살폈다. 이때 일상 생활의 문제가 '자기 세계'와 같은 약호로 해석될 수 있는 것은 김승옥 텍스트속 개별 인물들의 자기 주변과 현실에 대한 세계관이 생활의 문제를 통해 작가의 인식적 변화를 드러내고 있기 때문이다. 그리고 IV장에서는 이러한 심층 의미들이 표층의미로 어떻게 드러나는가 하는 서사 담론의 문제를 밝히고자 하였다. 문학작품의 재료인 언어상에서 현실을 굴절시키는 방식의 특성이 드러나는 지점을 찾아, 이들에 내재되어 있는 일관된 구조를 통해 뚜렷한 의식의 양식을 보여주는 서술자와 등장인물, 그리고 내포작가들이 이루어내는 서로 다른 차원의 목소리망을 검토해 보았다. V장에서는 이상의 김승옥 소설 분석을 통해 새롭게 추출해낸 본 논의의 메타텍스트를 제시하였다.
이러한 과정으로 논지를 전개하기 위해서 먼저 내적 분석을 통하여 개별 텍스트들의 약호를 찾아내고, 이후 당시는 세계관과 사회 문화를 재구하여 이 양자를 결합하면서 텍스트 산출자와 수용자를 아우를 수 있는 텍스트 자체의 의미를 찾고자 하였다. 이러한 작업등은 또 다른 메타텍스트를 찾아내어 김승옥 소설의 정당한 가치를 한국 현대 문학사내에 자리매김 하려는 것이다. 이같은 치밀한 텍스트 분석의 과정은 통해 추출해낸 기호들이 1960년대라는 당대 현실을 이해할 수 있는 약호로 작용함을 밝혀 김승옥 소설 텍스트를 새롭게 읽는 것이 본고의 최종 목적이 되는 셈이다.
김승옥이 소설을 쓰게 된 1960년대 초반의 한국 사회는 '도덕과 생존의 불일치'와 '가치의 전도 현상'에 직면해 있었던 시기로, 그는 1950년대의 연장선상에 있는 이러한 현실을 '윤리의 위기', 즉 주체의 자기보존과 일체성의 원리를 위협하는 위기 상황으로 인식하고 있었던 것이다. 이러한 문학적 질문의 형태로 새로운 질서를 모색하고자 하였던 김승옥의 문학에는 현실을 적극적으로 살아나갈 수 있는 주체를 정립시키려는 욕망이 내재하게 된다. 김승옥 소설에 있어서 주관성의 탐구는 '나'에 대한 존재론적 질문을 통해 새로운 주체를 확립시키기 위한 방법론이었던 것이다. 그런데 이러한 모색의 과정을 통해 김승옥이 그려보이고 확립시킨 주체는 안정되고 자율적이며 완전한 세계를 가진 존재가 아닌, 자기를 부정하기에 불안하고 고통스러우며 어지러운 세계를 지닌 주체가 되어버리고 만다.
이같이 '자기 세계'라는 주체의 정립을 추구하는 김승옥의 소설은 65년 이후 산업화가 전면화되면서 급격한 변화를 일으킨다. 그의 소설은 개인의 내면보다는 인간소외와 자기 상실이 일어나는 국면들에 대한 미시적인 탐구를 통해 객체로서의 사회 현실과 다양한 계층의 삶으로 시선을 옮겨간다. 이러한 주체 추구에서 객체 추구로의 변화는 '생활'과 일상에 대한 인식이나 자기와 타자의 거리감을 뚜렷하게 인식하는 언어표현에서도 보여진다. 김승옥의 후기 소설이 보여주는 이러한 변화의 양상은 주체의 위기를 내포하는 '윤리의 위기'에 대한 문제 의식이 여전하다는 점에서, 전기 소설에서와는 다른 변화이면서 동시에 연속성을 지닌 것이다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 문화기호학의 방법을 원용하여 김승옥 소설 전반을 대상으로 텍스트의 의미와 메시지를 찾아내고, 1960년대의 세계관과 사화 문화적 맥락을 검토함으로써, 또다른 메타 테스트를 찾아내어 김승옥 소설의 진정한 가치를 한국 현대 문학사내에 자리매김 하고자 하였다.
이같은 과정을 거쳐 산출된 새로운 메타텍스트를 통해, '자기 세계'의 추구라는 주체 정립의 양상, '일상 생활'에의 갈등과 편입이라는 약호들이 1960년대라는 당대 현실을 이해할 수 있는 해석소로 작용함을 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 김승옥 문학에서 보여지는, 현실과 구체적인 연관성을 지니면서 하나의 주체로서 '자기 세계'를 정립하는 길을 모색하는 것, 또한 '일상 생활'에의 거부와 편입 사이에서 갈등하면서 현실 사회체제의 운영 원리를 문제삼는 것, 그리고 급격한 산업화 환경속에서 인간 소외의 문제를 다룬 것들은, 모두 1960년대 당시의 문화적 맥락을 파악할 수 있는 해석소들로 이후 소설들의 새로운 출발점이자 하나의 전제가 되었다. 김승옥 소설이 던진 질문과 문제의식들이 자기 반성의 형태로 제시되고, 한국 문학사 내에서 하나의 획으로 작용하고 이음을 밝힌 점은 본 논의의 소정의 성과로서 의의를 지닐 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is to interpret the texts of Kim Sung-ok's novels in a new cultural semiotic way. Through integrated methodology based on cultural semiotics, the internal structures of Kim Sung-ok's novels are interpreted by comparing the text with the world view of the time and its structural context of the sociocultural. The form and meaning of the novel as well as its internal structure and principle were analysed. In addition, because the novel adopts a language code as its material, the code needed to be interpreted and clarified and the principles and structures associated with the code were studied for an aesthete value.
Even though cultural semiotics is in the process of producing another meta-text between the text producer and receiver, we cannot arbitrarily cut out and analysis enormous interpretations which occur in the receiver's mind without any objective criteria. In order to infer a very personal assumption, the principles and criteria of interpretation should be presented clearly. The principles of signification and codification) are required for this. Therefore, in the text of Kim Sung-ok's novels, the principle of codification of the personal identity inquiry, called 'self world', is not unrelated to the sociocultural system of the time and the structure of a world view. The system of ut texts based on linguistic signs interacts with the world view which is a system of culture. This means that in order to rightly interpret meanings and codes, they should be associated with the world view and the sociocultural system.
In order to maintain the balance of life, the characters in novels pursue harmony as a way to cope with the breakup of the world. Under the temporal background of the 1960s, objectification of a former life experience, visualization of anti-Communist ideology and the production of resistance literature are common patterns of counteraction of that age. Therefore, in order to interpret the texts of Kim Sung-ok's novels appropriately, we need to analyze the principle which codified the world of that time. This means that we need to reorganize the culture as an overall pattern of counteraction to achieve the balance of life, while rejecting the breakup of the world; as to understand the world view system and the semiotic system of that time.
Of course, the methods of positivism or historicism which attempt to interpret literary works focus on the context and social background. The methods of formalism or structuralism, which emphasize the analysis of the text all have their own errors and limits. When we choose one method to study the text of novels, it is inevitable to focus on one area and give secondary importance to other areas: therefore, overall generalization in the true sense cannot be achieved. This paper used an integrated methodology to put together all the text and context and tried to interpret the novels of Kim Sung-ok based on this methodology.
Using the methodology of cultural semiotics, this paper attempts to clarify the sense, structure and aesthetics of one of Kim Sung-ok's texts in the sociocultural background of that time. We examined how the text producer expresses the world and codified it under the sociocultural context; and how the receiver interprets this. On one hand, this task belongs to the category of semiotics in that we analyze the signs and the signification of codes in the text based on the theory and interpret them according to the producer and receiver's axes; and on the other hand, this task belongs to the category of cultural semiotics in that we not only interpret the signs and codes officially but also interpret them in the frameworks of sociocultural and the world view.
When applying cultural semiotics as a major methodology, which is used a standpoint seeking an internal structure and code adopts a structural method in the interpretation of texts in order to complement the problem of applying many interpretations arbitrarily without any objective criteria. This study examined the meaning and message, and values and aesthetes of the text and adopted a method to advance from the internal analysis of the text to the analysis of cultural context.
Chapter II suggests the theory of cultural semiotics and the research methodology of novels and based on that theory, it examines a general method for text analysis of Kim Sung-ok's novels which is adopted in this discussion. Chapter III examines the questions of pursuit of the self world and the establishment of subjecthood by dividing the novels into the former and latter period. Based on the division of the former and latter period. Chapter IV examines the aspect of changes in "how the questions of 'the self world' and 'life' give rise to complications" and "what they orient from." Chapter V aims at clarifying the question of "how such deep meanings are expressed into external meanings." Chapter VI is composed of a newly abstracted meta-text based on the analysis of Kim Sung-ok's novels.
Through internal analysis, this paper tried to discover the meanings of the text itself which is put together by the text producer and receiver, and by discovering the code of an individual text, reorganizing the world view and social culture and then combining the two. This is an attempt to establish the true value of Kim Sung-ok's novels in the history of Korean modern literature by finding out another meta-text. The ultimate goal of this paper is to clarify that the signs, which were abstracted from this elaborate process of text analysis, work as signs to understand the situation in 1960s so as to see the text of Kim Sung-ok's novels in a new aspect.
By adopting the cultural semiotic method, this paper aims at discovering the meanings and images of the text by examining the sociocultural context of the 1960s to find yet another meta-text.
The new meta-text clarified that the aspect of a subjecthood establishment of "the pursuit of the self world" and the codes of complication and transformation with the daily life work can be used as an interpretant to help us understand the reality at that time, in the 1960s. As an interpretant it plays a role as a starting point and forms a premise for later novels: to find out a way to establish the 'self world' as an independent subject bearing some concrete relations with reality which appears in the literature of Kim Sung-ok; to question the operating principle of the social system in the reality standing at the crossroads of rejection and transformation in the daily life of the 1960's; and to deal with the problem of human isolation in an environment of rapid industrialization. The significance of this paper is to clarify the questions and problems in Kim Sung-ok's novels and suggest they are presented in the form of self-reflection and are an epoch in the literary history of Korea.
