Edward Burne-Jones‘ <Laus Veneris> is an artwork that praises the elegant and beautiful Venus. His other works with the theme of 'Venus' do not require particular artwork interpretations. However, many characters other than Venus appear in <Laus Veneris> and showy fanciness is displayed with the background that is full of tapestry and plant designs. Among them, 'Venus' shows a female figure that has a different form than the traditional iconography. Therefore, <Laus Veneris> requires a new interpretation that is separated from other artworks with the theme of venus, and this research wishes to propose the interpretation from such perspective. Thus, the researcher analyzed <Laus Veneris> in terms of topic and format.
First, the world of British painting circles in the Victorian Age, which forms the background of the artwork, was examined. Burne-Jones was active as a Pre-Raphaelite, and escapes the influence of Rossetti through several trips to Italy. In particular, the Pre-Raphaelites produced many paintings related to literature, and gave birth to the female image of 'Femme Fatale'. Also, Art and Craft Movement with Morris was expressed through the ornaments in his artworks.
<Laus Veneris> chooses the topic from Swinburne's poems and Wagner's music dramas, instead of the traditional Venus handed down from ancient times. Such Venus shows the behavior of typical 'Femme Fatale' who seduces men. However, it shows smooth and elegant form that is different from Rossetti's strong and defiant 'Femme Fatale'. Also, four maids appear with the atmosphere of angels like the ones in Botticelli's artwork. Tapestry behind Venus expresses the superiority of love in everything with a motif of 'Triumph of Venus'. Tannhaeuser and knights depicted outside the window represent 'Gentleman', the British male figure of the 19th century.
The ornaments in <Laus Veneris> present themselves in forms of tapestry, plant designs and musical instruments. Tapestry is reflecting the fanciness of Arts and Crafts Movement. Also, plant designs can be viewed as a result of Pre-Raphaelite trend and experiential observation at that time, and is related to the influx of Japanese arts. Lastly, musical instruments possessed by maids display the interests towards the Venetian style. Also, the sense of rhythm felt from colors and behaviors of characters display the musicality that was under the spotlight in the late 19th century's England. Venus' hall that is full of such ornaments reminds people of living space in the Victorian Age.
Examining things mentioned above, Burne-Jones‘ <Laus Veneris> is inducing Burne-Jones‘ unique female images that are smooth and elegant by combining with the 'Femme Fatale' image of the time. <Laus Veneris> is a pure painting, but it expresses the overall tendency that covers the period by reflecting literary elements, musical styles and the fanciness of bourgeois taste of the time.
