This dissertation reports two inter-related studies of mass audience behavior: one on audience concentration across media and the other on determinants of Web site audience size.
Concentration within a medium occurs when audiences are unequally distributed across the available items of content. To the extent that people use only a few offerings, the audience is said to be concentrated. Since concentration characterizes an entire medium, it is best studied in comparisons across media. This study employed two measures of concentration: Lorenz curves and uncertainty ratios. The former has been widely used by other researchers to describe concentration in specific media. The latter represents a novel and promising alternative to the more conventional measure. Both measures produce similar results.
Evidence of audience concentration was found in all media studied in this dissertation. Consistent with the hypothesis, media that offer more abundant choices (i.e., trade paperback books, magazines and Web sites) are more concentrated. Media with fewer choices available (i.e., broadcast television networks, cable networks, and radio networks) are relatively less concentrated. An explanation for the results, that involves the concept of repertoires, is discussed.
The size of Web site audiences, as measured by their unique audiences, was studied using an OLS regression. As hypothesized, audience size was affected by ownership characteristics (sites owned by Internet networking firms or affiliated with Yahoo had bigger audiences), content/function characteristics (sites with search engine or email/chat functions had bigger audiences), and audience loyalty as measured by visits per person. That latter variable was the single biggest determinant of audience size (r=.338) and provided evidence of a double jeopardy effect. Together, a five variable model explained 21% of the variance in audience size.
The implications of the results for concepts of diversity and economic power are discussed.
