In recent years there has been an increase in the interest towards the historical development of the ergativity in Indo-Aryan languages. In this article, I have seen that the diachronic analysis of ergativity in Indo-Aryan languages has been under a dispute for a long period of time. The dispute is whether the ergativity is there in Indo-Aryan languages because of the historical change (passive origin) or is a matter of historical stability (already existed in the OIA).
However, much of the discussion revolves around the widely accepted theory that the ergativity has originated from a passive verbal form, namely the past passive participle -ta in Old Indo-Aryan. However, there is also other view that there was no shift or development of ergativity in Indo-Aryan languages. It is an instance of historical stability rather than an example of change from accusative to ergative since the ergative construction arises through the extension of already existing constructions involving non-canonical subjects within transitive verbs.
With regard to the passive origin, I will show Bubenik (1989)’s argument that the origins of ergativity in IA languages is based on the assumption of markedness shift. In other words, when the ta participle comes with transitive verbs, the reading of the sentence happens to be close to a passive construction, whereas it is interpreted with an active meaning when the same ta participle comes with intransitive verbs. The frequent usage of transitive verbs in the MIA period made the ta construction to have both active and passive readings. Since the ta participle has been fully incorporated into the inflectional paradigm (-ta>-y-) in the late MIA times, the full-fledged passive construction was developed in the NIA period and this differed from the existing passive construction in the MIA languages.
In this paper I would like to make the point clear at this stage that I disagree that the ergative case marker of Hindine is directly originated from the instrumental marker of Sanskrit ina. Instead, I support that the ergative case marker in Hindi is developed not from janiy? ‘for the sake of/ because of ’ as has been proposed in Butt (2005a and 2005b) but from l?gi/l?g? ‘stick to’ proposed by Beams (1872)and Kellogg(1893).
Moreover, I also discuss that both passive and ergative constructions share the same structure in terms of the case assignment and semantic information that the subjects of both ergative and passive constructions have their case and semantic features checked by the light verb. This suggests that the ergative in Hindi is an inherent property of a passive construction in Sanskrit.
