The 2008 Ramsar Conference adopted a resolution on "Enhancing Biodiversity through Wetland Systems," underscoring the growing significance of paddy wetlands. Changes in dietary culture, driven by an increase in single-person households and socio-economic shifts, have led to a decline in rice consumption. Concurrently, the abandonment of rice paddies has surged, particularly in rural areas with an aging population.
Abandoned rice paddy wetlands, resulting from agricultural abandonment or natural succession, have ecological value for habitat diversity and ecosystem services. Recognizing this value is crucial, emphasizing the need for thoughtful preservation instead of indiscriminate development.
Amphibians occupy a crucial intermediate position in the food chain of ecosystems, playing a significant role in maintaining ecological stability. As ectothermic animals sensitive to external temperature and humidity changes, amphibians are particularly vulnerable to environmental changes such as global warming. Research evaluating the suitability of abandoned rice paddy wetlands as habitats for amphibians emphasizes the necessity for analyzing not only vegetation but also various factors, including hydrology and soil, to enhance the applicability of the study. However, previous studies on the typology and biodiversity assessment of amphibians inhabiting abandoned rice paddy wetlands, based on the spatial characteristics of both the amphibians and the wetlands, have been insufficient.
This study aims to classify abandoned rice paddy wetlands in Chungcheongnam Province, characterized by diverse features, based on the detected amphibian species using environmental DNA metabarcoding. Additionally, the research intends to evaluate the biodiversity of abandoned rice paddy wetlands based on ecological characteristics and analyze the features of each wetland type. Environmental DNA samples were analyzed for amphibians in 21 abandoned rice paddy wetlands, resulting in the detection of five families and eight species, including protected species (Asian toads, Korean brown frogs, Korean large brown frogs, and Korean salamanders), climate change indicator species (tree frogs, Korean large brown frogs), and invasive species (American bullfrogs). Among the surveyed wetlands, those with nearby reservoirs or irrigation channels exhibited higher biodiversity indices within the study area, indicating a stable and sufficient presence of amphibians.
The results of classifying 21 abandoned rice paddy wetlands into three types (A, B, and C) revealed that Type A sites exhibited a significantly high proportion of forested areas within the land cover, with a predominant detection of Korean brown frogs. Furthermore, the presence of forested or agricultural areas accounted for over 48%, reflecting the habitat characteristics of Korean brown frogs. Type B included sites where reservoirs classified as ponds or wetlands were notably present, resulting in a significantly higher proportion of aquatic areas. This type was characterized by the dominance of American bullfrogs with habitat preferences for ponds, reservoirs, and rivers. Type C was classified as a abandoned rice paddy wetlands type where eight amphibian species were diversely detected.
This study holds significance as it utilizes environmental DNA metabarcoding to investigate diverse abandoned rice paddy wetlands. Considering the increasing trend in the number of abandoned rice paddy wetlands due to rural aging, the results of this study are anticipated to serve as foundational data for the restoration and management of abandoned rice paddy wetlands to leverage their ecological value as amphibian habitats.
