The first presence of murals in Chinese ancient burial chamber was equivalent to the presence of brick burials or more or less later than that, in the middle and latter West Han period in the 1st century B.C. Ever since this period of time, sepulchral installation had changed. In the East Han's matured period, tomb icons went through tremendous developments, leading to the increasing discoveries of tomb murals in Chinese scattered regions. Due to the implementation of parr funeral caused by economic poverty when entering the period of Three Kingdoms, they temporarily disappeared in the Central, Only remote regions like the East Northern and the West Northern areas still had them in mortuary houses.
From the period of Sixteen Kingdoms to the early Northern Dynasty, the production of tomb imagery entered a new phase. In the matured period of Southern and Northern Dynasties, 'impressed brick style' were widespread in mural tombs of me Southern dynasty with humid climate, malting influences on the changes of tomb murals in northern area. In the case of the Northern Dynasty, especially in the period of Pingcheng in Northern Wei, tomb murals could not be an indispensible element in sepulchral installations, while it became indispensible for emperors and aristocrats of the Eastern Wei and the Northern Qi Dynasty, leading to the elevated level of artistic accomplishments in signs. On the contrary, the Western Wei and Northen Zhou, located in the western area of the Northern Dynasty, were too conservative to paint murals inside the emperor's chamber tombs.
In the Sui and Tang period, Chinese tomb murals flourished. A new trend of combining several kinds of arts brought up a new mode during the Tang period. Depictions inside chamber tombs reflected new developments of painting art in terms of both contents and techniques, so that the panoramic changes could be read through themes in a stylized manner.
Even though there were paintings inside imperial grave in the period of Northern Song Dynasty and Liao Dynasty, most of documents for this period of time have been discovered from the graves of common people, which offered a good chance to take a glimpse of commoners' living conditions. Especially, tomb murals in the period of Liao Dynasty gained attentions due to its detailed descriptions of ethnic features, by mirroring the everyday life of the Khitans.
Since the Yuan Dynasty, tomb murals went on the decline. There were not any tomb mural in the emperors' chamber tombs in the period of Yuan, Ming, and Ching, whereas there were a few in the cases of the graves for common people and public officials.
When considering the current situation of having very Little extant original paintings, any tomb mural painted from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty should be preserved with the highest level of caution and significance. Furthermore it is notable that these tomb images provide us with substantial leads in our understanding of funeral rituals and the mindset of Chinese ancient people. This study deals with not only the current state in the description and interpretation of Chinese ancient tomb murals but the aims of further researches based on the reflections of the previous studies.
