한국 해군장교 계급장의 변천과 그 함의 - 견장형･수장형 계급장에 주목하여 - = The Transition of Republic of Korea Naval Officer’s Rank Insignia and its Implication - Focusing on Shoulder･Sleeve Insignias -

Shoulder and sleeve insignias for officers were widely worn since independence in 1945. Flag officers, Mid-grade and junior grade officers alike had differentiated their ranks via the numbers and width of gold stripes. While flag officers wore exceptionally star-shaped rank devices in shoulder insignias. Gold stripes originated from military uniform regulations adopted under the United States Army Military Government in Korea. This explains why Korean navy has maintained strong universality and internationality ever since its establishment.
In the early 1950s, the introduction of Korean navy uniform regulations led to discussions on rank insignias. In late 1952, draft insignias were designed and official insignias were established in late 1954. These rank devices were based in line with the United States Navy uniform regulations. The introduced rank insignias were worn until December of 1986, or as far as May of the following year.
A new policy announced in 1980s marked a significant change in the naval officer rank insignias. In addition to stripes on sleeves, it was mandated for navy officers to place metal rank devices on shoulder, as army, air force and marine corps officers do. Ministry of National Defense led such a change due to difficulties in distinction of ranks for naval officers. Since the change of rank insignias, Korean navy made efforts to revert to the previous rank insignias, and the traditionalist fervor inside the navy led to the invalidation of the new policy for navy officers’ insignias in late December of 1992. From then on, rank insignias for naval officers were unchanged.
