중국 근대 과학 담론과 그 표상(表象) -근대 매체 및 과학소설을 중심으로- = Chinese Modern Science Discourse and Its Representation -Focusing on Modern Media and Science Fiction-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

중국 근대 신문과 잡지 등 매체 상에는 번역 및 창작물로서의 과학소설은 물론, 과학(과학소설)과 관련된 언술(言述) 등이 소개된다. 당시, 과학소설이 번역ㆍ창작되고 보급 및 전파되는 과정은 과학에 대한 시대적 담론과 표상, 그리고 불가지(不可知)한 세계에 대한 갈망과 서사로 구현되는 근대 시공간 너머의 과학적 상상력을 반영한다고 할 수 있다.
본 논문은 이와 같은 인식에서 출발한다. 즉, 중국 근대 과학 담론과 과학소설이 표상하는 실체에 접근하려면 당대의 문화적ㆍ사회적 특성에 대한 이해가 요구된다. 따라서, 본 논문은 중국 근대 과학소설이 번역ㆍ창작되고 하나의 장르로 형성되는 과정에서 보여지는 주요 논자들의 인식과 견해, 근대 매체에서 보이는 과학(과학소설) 담론과 작품 등의 자료를 분석하고, 이를 통해 중국 근대 과학 담론과 표상을 규명하고자 하였다.
구체적으로, 본 논문은 다음 두 갈래로 나누어 전개하였다. 첫째, 과학(과학소설)과 관련된 담론을 중심으로 중국 근대의 시선과 의미를 탐문하였다. 둘째, 과학소설의 갈망과 서사를 중심으로 중국 근대 시공간 너머의 과학적 상상력을 조망하였다. 이는 우주 공간으로 확대된 탐험의 서사, 과학기술의 진보와 과학적 상상력, 부국강병과 자주자립 사상의 추구로 세분하여 조망하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Science fiction emerged in China at the turn of the modern era. Although these novels are sometimes crude, they are true to their genre and directly or indirectly reflect the Chinese imagination and language about the reconstruction of a new civilized world through science and technology. In addition, during this period, modern media such as newspapers and magazines introduced translated or original science fiction, as well as discourses related to science. Considering these points, the process of science fiction translation, creation, dissemination, and enjoyment can be said to dynamically reflect the contemporary discourse and representation of modern science in China and the scientific imagination beyond modern space and time, represented by the longing and narrative of the unknowable world.
This paper is motivated by the same problem: to approach the discourse of modern Chinese science and the entities represented by science fiction requires an understanding of the cultural and social characteristics of the period. Therefore, it comprehensively summarizes and analyzes the perceptions and views of major intellectuals on science during this period, discourses and works (creative fiction) related to science fiction in the modern media, and identifies the discourse and representations of modern Chinese science that made science fiction possible as a genre. In this respect, the process of examining the discourse and representation of science in modern China through the analysis of science fiction itself and other materials will provide an opportunity to redefine the status of science fiction.
Given the need for such a study, the paper proceeds in the following two directions. First, it explores the gaze and meaning of science (including science fiction) in modern China by focusing on the discourses related to science. Second, it examines the scientific imagination beyond space and time in modern China by focusing on the longings and narratives of science fiction. It was subdivided into narratives of exploration that extended into outer space, advances in science and technology and the scientific imagination, and the pursuit of national strength and self-reliance.
