청인 사회에서 경험한 농인 당사자의 생애사 연구 = A Life History Study of a Deaf Individual’s Experience in a Hearing Society

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 청인 사회에서 성장한 농인 당사자의 생애를 통해, 농인의 성장 과정과 정체성 형성, 그리고 자아 성찰의 의미를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구자는 생애사 연구(life history research) 방법을 적용하여 농인 당사자 1인을 심층적으로 탐구하였다. 자료는 심층면담, 개인 기록, 연구자의 현장노트를 통해 수집되었으며, 멘델바움(Mandelbaum)의 분석틀인 ‘삶의 영역, 전환점, 적응’을 중심으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 농인 당사자는 청인 중심의 사회와 교육 환경 속에서 의사소통의 제약과 사회적 고립을 경험했으며, 그 과정에서 자아정체성의 혼란을 겪었다. 그러나 농 공동체와의 만남, 교직의 선택, 그리고 농인으로서의 사회적 역할 인식은 정체성 형성과 성장을 촉진하는 주요 전환점으로 작용하였다. 본 연구는 농인의 생애를 단순한 극복 서사가 아닌 사회적 구조 속 관계와 상호작용의 결과로 이해함으로써, 농인의 교육 및 사회 지원의 방향을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

This study explores the growth process, identity formation, and self-reflection of a Deaf individual who grew up in a hearing society. Using a life history research approach, the researcher conducted an in-depth inquiry into a single Deaf participant. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, personal records, and the researcher’s field notes, and analyzed with Mandelbaum’s framework of “life domains, turning points, and adaptation.” The findings show that within hearing-centered social and educational contexts, the participant experienced communication barriers and social isolation that led to periods of identity confusion. However, encounters with the Deaf community, the choice of a teaching career, and an emerging awareness of social roles as a Deaf person functioned as key turning points that facilitated identity development and growth. By interpreting the Deaf life not as a simple narrative of individual “overcoming,” but as a product of relationships and interactions within social structures, this study provides implications for the direction of educational and social support for Deaf individuals.
