A study on the aspects of violence in Lee Seung Woo's novels : centering around Rene Girard's theory
This paper aims to analyze the work of novelist Lee Seung-woo through the triangular theory of desire, scapegoat mechanism and original biblical interpretation, which can be said to be the three pillars of literary critic Rene Girard's theory, to reveal what the writer's main topic consciousness is. In particular, the focused on looking at the key concept of violence: the causes and consequences of violence, and what the solutions are.
In the first part of the main theory, I explained Rene Girard's theory, which is the theoretical foundation for analyzing Lee's work, and took note of the common points in Girard's theory and Lee Seung-woo's novel. He insisted that the desires of a person do not arise naturally, but through mediators. He believes that as a person's desire grows, conflicts arise when the distance between desire and desire is narrow, and mankind maintains a social peace by creating a scapegoat in the role of resolving conflict. This scapegoat mechanism, an order of maintaining society, is justified by the subsequent work of giving violence the attribute of ‘sacred'. For this reason, people in the community can’t realize that what they have done is violence. The scapegoat mechanism is unreasonable to the victims, and he is even more unjust because he has no reason to be sacrificed.
At this very point that there is a difference between the myth that says the scapegoat has sins that can be sacrificed, and the Bible says that there is no sin in the scapegoat. Girard says that it is Jesus' act to expose and overthrow the sacrifice mechanism. Girard explained his argument with myths, Bibles, texts, and various cultural and anthropological examples. His extensive research expands the possibilities of expanding the theories he claims. Girard’s theory is useful as a tool for interpreting text, including the origin and myth of human culture. This is even more effective when interpreting Lee's novels, which have been focused on themes of God and humans, violence and individuals.
In ancient myths romanticized in modern society, Girards theory that real violence actually existed opens the way for another interpretation of "social meaning" in Lee Seung-woo's work, which is labeled ideological and autobiographical fiction.
In other words, Girard's theory reveals that Lee's theme is based on the mechanism of human culture, repeated in the order of “mimetic desire – conflict – sacrifice – peace.”
The second chapter of this paper analyzes Lee's novels on the basis of Girard's theories, such as the occurrence and transmission of violence from the desire to imitate, and the scapegoat mechanism, the collective violence resulting from it, and Girard's unique biblical interpretation and assertion. Lee Seung-woo started his work in the 80’s, but is not classified as a novelist who writes socially participatory works. However, due to the characteristics of ‘fiction' that reflects reality, he naturally takes the theme of the times he lived in writing. The core theme of Lee's novel is “violence” and salvation from it. Violence comes from the desire to imitate and conflict between individuals on the basis of social structural problems, and the crisis of the community caused by such conflicts is solved by a device called ‘sacrifice'. “Scapegoat” is more important in Judaism and Christianity, The innocence of Jesus Christ, the essence of Jewish-Christian thought, is different from the common scapegoat with obvious reasons to be sacrificed in other myths.
The solution to violence depicted in Lee's novels is to follow Jesus, as Girard’s claims.
Lee Seung-woo's novels in this paper were selected as “Magnolia Park (1998)” and “Poison (2015)”, which illustrate the triangular theory of desire. “Sentences (1993)”, “Ways to You (1995)”, and “Trapped Ways (1998)” were selected to show the scapegoat mechanism. Finally, we will look at the “portraits of Erysichton” (1981) and “Song of the Earth” (2012), which show the image of Jesus' imitation as the ultimate solution to violence.
The distinctive theme of Lee Seung-woo's novel comes from his debut novel, Portrait of Erysichton, combining the 1981 Pope sniper with the story of ‘Erysichton', which was destroyed by eternal desire.
His theme consciousness is also emphasized in "poison," which depicts a character whose discovers his desire and destroys himself in pursuit of the desire. “Magnolia Park” also shows how the individual's desire to imitate is reached. Lee Seung-woo's focus on ‘individual' is mainly about trying to get out of an unavoidable situation, This is the same pattern as what Girard called "violence".
In his "trapped way", "sentence", and "the way to you", Lee Seung-woo depicts the desire for imitation and violence that extends beyond the individual to the social realm. in this part, Collective violence and scapegoat mechanisms implemented in a way that would subdue confusion in violent societies are well evident. Furthermore, Lee Seung-woo brings up about individual imitation desires and violence from “The Portrait of Erysichton” and “Song of the Earth”, and suggests the conflicts and solutions that arise.
The main theme of this Lee Seung-woo novel is in line with his theories, including Rene Girard's unique interpretation and assertion of the Bible, and it is common to say that he pursues "Jesus imitation" as a true salvation.
