The use of smart devices of preschoolers in multicultural families
and mothers’ perceptions on their use

The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual situation of the use of smart devices of preschoolers in multicultural families and mothers’ perceptions on their use. In order to attain the purpose of the study, research problems were set as below.

Research Problem1. What is the actual situation of smart device use of the children in multicultural family?
Research Problem2. What are mothers’ perceptions on children’s actual use of smart devices in multicultural families?

The subjects of this study are 108 mothers of children in multicultural families who go to daycare centers located in Chungnam and Gyeonggi-do, where the distribution of multicultural families is high. The survey was conducted from January 15th to February 20th, 2019, for 6weeks. In order to examine the actual situation of the use of smart devices of preschoolers in multicultural families and mothers’ perceptions on their use, 「Smart device usage of preschoolers and mothers’ perception on their children」, which is a modified and supplemented scale, by Yeon-joo Kang (2014), of Won-suk Lee and Young-hwa Seong(2012)’s 「Smart device usage of preschoolers and their parents」 and Kum-shik Kang(2006)’s 「Utilization of internet site for preschoolers at homes and the perception of parents on it」 was used. The survey tool included 10 questions about mother's background, 10 questions about the use of smart devices by children, 10 questions about the method how to use smart devices and the contents, 8 questions about participation degree to help children using smart devices, 4 questions about the application downloaded in smart device for children, and 9 questions about the necessity and requirement of the smart device use of the children. χ2 verification was conducted with the collected data analyzed by using SPSS 21.0.

The results of the study are as follows.
First, since 13~24 months multicultural children used smart devices the most, and for single use time, less than 20 minutes took up the most, it was found that the age of preschoolers using smart devices in multi-culture was becoming younger and that smart device using frequency of them were every day. In terms of smart device using time, the lower the income of family, the longer children used smart devices and most of the children found to learn how to use smart devices from their parents and use smart devices when they’re with parents. Depending on the situation, parents and children decided the usage of smart devices together and used them for fun and learning. In addition, it was reported that in many cases, there were rules set for the smart device use, and when there was no rule for the use, smart devices were used when children wished or for the purpose of entertainment and fun when parents needed. Since it is difficult for young children to possess smart devices by themselves, it is necessary to form the right culture for children to use smart devices through parent education.
Second, in terms of mother's perception on their children’s use of smart devices in multicultural families, 69.4% of respondents said that smart devices help learning and are suitable for current culture. Effective learning was highly expected as the purpose of using smart device and education was the important selection criteria for downloading applications for preschoolers. Educationally, the important selection criterion for application downloading for infants and young children was. On the other hand, there were some reasons why using smart devices were not necessary was that electromagnetic wave or bad eye sight, which are negative influences of using smart devices, were concerned. Also, children to keep promises (time, contents) with parents when using smart devices were recognized importantly.
This study is meaningful in that it helped understanding the situation of preschooler’s smartphone usage in reality, in accordance with the rapid increase of multicultural families in Korea, and that it is the first study to measure the perceptions of parents on their use of smart devices.

본 연구는 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용에 대한 어머니의 인식 및 실태를 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 설정한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.

연구문제 1. 다문화가정의 영유아의 스마트기기 사용실태는 어떠한가?

연구문제 2. 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트기기 사용에 대한 어머니의 인식은 어떠한가?


본 연구에서는 다문화 가정 분포가 많은 충남 및 경기도에 위치한 어린이집의 다문화 가정 어머니 108명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하였으며 조사 기간은 2019년 1월 15일~2월 20일까지 총 6주간 걸쳐 연구를 실시하였다. 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용실태 및 어머니의 인식을 알아보기 위해서 이원석, 성영화(2012)의 ‘유아와 부모의 스마트 사용 실태’와 강금식(2006)의 ‘가정에서의 유아용 인터넷 사이트 활용 실태와 부모의 인식’척도를 수정, 보완한 강연주(2014)의 「유아의 스마트 사용실태와 어머니 인식」척도를 사용하였다. 본 검사 도구는 어머니의 배경 10문항, 자녀의 스마트 기기 사용실태를 묻는 10문항, 세 번째는 스마트 기기 사용법 및 내용을 묻는 10문항, 자녀의 스마트 기기 이용을 돕기 위한 참여 정도 8문항, 자녀를 위해 스마트 기기에 다운로드 받은 애플리케이션 4문항, 자녀의 스마트 기기 이용이 필요성 및 요구에 관한 9문항으로 총 41문항이다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 21.0을 사용하여 분석하여 χ2검증을 실시하였다.

연구결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용 시기는 13개월~24개월 미만, 1회 사용시간은 20분 이하가 가장 높게 나타나 다문화 영유아들의 스마트 기기 사용 연령이 하향화되고 있으며 다문화 가정 영유아의 사용빈도는 매일 사용하는 것으로 알 수 있었다.스마트 기기 사용시간은 월평균 소득이 낮을수록 스마트 기기 사용시간이 높게 나타났으며 영유아는 대부분 스마트 기기의 사용법을 부모에게 배우고 주로 부모와 함께 하는 것으로 나타났다. 사용 결정 방법은 상황에 따라 영유아와 부모가 함께 결정하며 재미와 학습적 요소를 위하여 사용한다. 또한 스마트 기기 사용규칙을 정해놓고 사용하는 경우가 많으며 사용규칙이 없는 경우에는 자녀가 원할 때나 부모가 자녀에게 오락, 재미의 목적으로 필요하다고 보고되었다. 이는 영유아는 직접 스마트 기기를 소유하는 것은 어렵기 때문에 부모교육을 통해서 올바른 스마트 기기 문화를 형성해야 할 것이다.

둘째, 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용에 대한 어머니의 인식은 스마트 기기가 학습과 시대 문화에 적합하다고 반응이 69.4%로 가장 높았다. 스마트 기기를 사용하는 목적은 학습효과에 대한 기대가 높음으로 나타났으며 영유아를 위한 애플리케이션 다운로운시 중요한 선정기준은 교육성이었다. 반면 스마트 기기가 필요하지 않은 이유는 스마트 기기의 부정적인 영향인 장시간 사용을(전자파, 시력 문제 우려) 우려하고 있었으며 스마트 기기 이용시 부모와의 약속한 사항(시간, 내용)을 지키는 것이 중요하다고 답변하였다.
본 연구는 최근 다문화 가정이 급증하는 우리나라 현실에 맞추어 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용실태를 파악하고 이들의 부모 인식을 측정한 최초의 연구라는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.
