(Background and Purpose) The advancement of digital technologies in the 21st century has transformed educational environments, turning residential spaces into platforms for learning and growth. Education today is shifting toward data-driven hyper-personalization, emphasizing the importance of customized learning based on children’s aptitudes and abilities. In this context, smart homes must evolve beyond convenience and safety to serve as educational platforms supporting children’s development. This study aims to design a smart home environment capable of accurately identifying children’s aptitudes and developmental levels and executing personalized learning based on the results. (Method) This study proposes an aptitude identification and personalized education system within the smart home environment and develops spatial layouts applicable to residential settings. First, the feasibility and current technological status of aptitude assessment and personalized education were examined. Based on these findings, a theoretical framework for a smart home-based aptitude and learning system was established. Next, children’s rooms were designed by developmental stage, applying the proposed system to actual living spaces. (Results) The study produced three major outcomes. First, an aptitude identification system was proposed that collects and analyzes children’s language, play, emotional, and behavioral data using IoT devices and AI technologies within the smart home. This enables the creation of individual aptitude profiles and tracking of developmental changes. Second, a personalized education system was conceptualized in which an AI curator recommends suitable learning content and provides real-time feedback. This promotes self-directed learning while also offering multi-layered reports to parents and teachers. Third, spatial designs were suggested for children’s rooms by developmental stage: infancy (0–2 years) with spaces for emotional stability and early cognition; Toddler (3–6 years) with play-centered environments fostering exploration, language, and physical development; and School-aged Child (7–12 years) with composite learning spaces integrating focused study and creative activities. (Conclusions) The proposed smart home framework for aptitude identification and personalized education redefines the home as a child-centered educational environment, complementing the limitations of conventional schooling. By integrating differentiated spaces, learning content, and smart devices according to developmental stages, this study demonstrates the potential of the home as a core educational platform. While presented as a conceptual design, further empirical research with real user data and continued technological development are required. Issues of data privacy and commercialization also remain as challenges. Nevertheless, this study highlights the potential of smart homes to identify children’s latent capabilities at an early stage and to support personalized education aligned with developmental needs, offering a meaningful foundation for future transformations in education.
