The use of 'disguise' as a comedy technique traces back to classical comedy that is largely divided into Greek and Roman comedy. In Shakespearean work the role of girl-page is remarkable among the girl-page, the boy-bride, the rougue, the spy and the lover as disguise. On the other hand, sexual disguise has recently begun to attract attention from feminist critics.
The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of disguise and to prove its significance in the functional aspects of the heroine as expressed in Rosalind through the opposition to Orlando, Silvius, Phebe and Corin in one of Shakespeare's representative romantic comedies (Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It and Twlfth Night), i.e, As you Like It.
Rosalind meets negatively her bad fortune through Duke Frederick's usurpation at the beginning. But in Arden, as a teacher Rosalind governs everyone she comes in contact with and thus makes possible the reconciliation between Silvius and Phebe as well as that between Orlando herself. Moreover Rosalind begins to test Orlando's love for her by her disguise and tries to enlighten him on the methods of courtship and marriage. so her disguise embodied confict between the woman's self-concept and the man's inner desire beyond role-playing performed by former disguise. Thus Rosalind by her disguise reveals modernity in her opposition to Orlando.
On the other hand, more important to As Like It even than the inner life of its characters is the social game in the opposition of sexes, which leads the characters not only to greater understanding of themselves but also to greater capacity for social interaction and harmonious commitment in love and marriage. And Rosalind especially clings to her own class and in Arden governs through her will Corin, Phebe and Silvius who are different from her in class. Thus simultaneously with modernity does Rosalind reveal traditional characteristic by her disguise. Therefore Shakespeare transformed the technique of disguise into not simple footsteps but a new recreative form. Moreover Rosalind's function by disguise provided significant meaning in interpretation of work son the basis of feminist criticism.
