The purpose of this study is to acknowledge female students’ status as political subjects through a comprehensive review of the activities and self-awareness of female participants of the Gwangju Student Movement and social perception of female student movements. As main subjects of student movements, female students actively participated in the Gwangju Student Movement that spread across the country in 1929. Led by middle school students, female students across all levels of elementary, middle and high schools consistently participated over time, in line with the overall participation trend of the Movement. Female students’ activities primarily consisted of Man-se demonstrations on campus and school strikes, with some participating in joint demonstrations with male students that took place across the country. In addition to ordinary activities, female student activities in particular included wailing (Tong-gok) and compassionate activities at individual level. These unique features could be understood as alternative means for female students to express themselves given the restrictions on their social activities, unlike male-centered movements that aimed at large scale popular movements. Female students also expressed their social awareness by sharing sympathy and indignation with respect to the Gwangju Student Incident as fellow students. They recognized the political meaning and purpose of demonstrations, through which they sought to correct ethnic discriminations and improve social reality. Some also connected their sense of social responsibility as the educated elite to the honor of their alma mater. The Gwangju Student Movement was an opportunity for female students to recognize themselves as political subjects and become active participants. The society, however, perceived female student movements through sexist gender norms and took a different perspective. Colonial authorities deemed female student activities as an anti-colonial nationalist movement and as a socially destructive movement that disrupted the foundations of family because it was led by women. The implied attitude of Korean intellectuals during the colonial era was that female students should strive to become good wives and mothers rather than participating in political activities such as demonstrations. Colonial authorities and Korean intellectuals at the time thus joined forces through androcentric gender norms to restrain female student activities. But female students refused to remain confined to the private sphere of their home according to the gender norms imposed on them. They actively made their way into the public space, voiced their opposition, and sought to play their roles as members of society. Female students’ conscious participation in social movements was a way for them to break from the discriminatory gender norms imposed on women and realize their political subjectivity.
