동학사상과 시민론(侍民論) - 새로운 관계론적 인식과 실천을 중심으로 - = Donghak thought and Shi-min Theory : A Study Focusing on New Relational Perceptions and Practices

The purpose of this study is to name ‘Shi-min(侍民)’ as an actor who has emerged since the creation of the Donghak thought, and the actor who Donghak thought paid attention to as the subject of new social transformation, and to organize the ideological and practical conception that sought to promote new social transformation centered on such Shi-min into ‘Shi-min discourse’. The purpose of this study is to reconsider the Donghak thought, which is the ideological basis of the actor of Shi-min, from the perspective of social transformation thoughts that presented new relational perceptions and practices and to examine the conditions and main characteristics of Shi-min as the subject of social transformation.
This study interprets Donghak thought as a thought that attempted to practice a new social recognition relationship based on the recognition of intersubjectivity (dignity and autonomy) and the perception of mutual-organic relationship between cosmic-beings, humanity, and all things. Citing the concept of ‘Shi(侍) thought’, which generally implies the relationship of mutual-organic relations between cosming-beings, humanity, and all things, a new actor based on Donghak thought was named ‘Shimin’.
Shi-min can be summarized as self-ethical actors(self-cultivating actors) who do relational perception and practices, these actors are aware of the various relationships they have in their lives and are reflectively reorganizing and changing themselves(and their self-ethics) in those relationships. These Shi-min reflect on themselves in a relationship with other people in everyday life and seek new self-change(and social change), through their characteristics of thought, self-cultivation, and contacting-transition.
This study argues that the main characteristics of the actor called ‘Shi-min’ and the process of its subjectivation, which are the new relational perception and practice suggested by Donghak thought, have worth as ideological and practical resources that can be referenced in the process of seeking a new social and political subject in modern society and democracy today.
