As the 7^(th) Educational Curriculum has been introduced, there are growing concerns about learner-centered education based on constructivistic education and consumer-centered education. Papers on learner-centered education are classified into research on theories and methods, those on the application of theories to methods and those on empirical verification in the field. This shows that learner-centered education has been being studied as a subject of great importance. Relevant theories are constructivism, acceptance theory and theme-based theory. Relevant methodologies are cooperative learning, discussion learning, group learning, program learning and inquisitive learning, etc.
Literature education has been continuously studied since it was introduced in the 1970s. From the viewpoint of the 7^(th) Educational Curriculum, literature education emphasizes acceptance and creation, the value of literature and literary attitude. Thus literary education demands learners' activities and aims at converting learners' thought and developing their creativeness through exploring the aspects of value and creation.
In executing learner-centered literature learning activities, it is efficient to take a literary work and apply various programs to the work. Thus this study chose 'The Winter of Seoul in 1964' a novel written by Kim Seung-ok. As they reflect the historical situation, characters in Kim Seung-ok's novels characteristically contrastive compared to those in other writers' works. In particular, the three characters in 'The Winter of Seoul in 1964' are described as ones who have failed to find solutions for problems of the age and get frustrated or go mature, types of people who are not found in his previous works. In addition, the work shows a form of literature in a period of transition from the post-war 1950s to the age of sensitivity that attaches importance to man's inner world.
Focused on novel 'The Winter of Seoul in 1964' this study looks for a teaching plan. The teaching plan produces a program based on constructivism and the acceptance theory. The teaching is composed of three sessions, which are learning before reading, learning during reading and learning after reading. In the first session before reading, students learn using scraps centering on the characters and stories of the novel, are induced to have a spontaneous class and are given opportunities for presentation. The second session during reading is a stage of internalization. In the second session, students deal with a series of incidents, try to change the conclusion, or internalize through appreciation. The second session is executed through general and advanced courses. In particular, students participate in group discussion and record their own thoughts, others' thoughts, their changed thoughts etc. on a group discussion note.
The third session after reading is divided into content learning, goal learning and application learning. In the content learning, a plot outline table is prepared and students imagine the characters' emotion in main events, consider the title of the novel, imagine based on the contents, present and discuss. The common topic in the third session is to understand the characters' personalities. Thus learners imagine and write on the three characters' positions and behaviors related to a series of incidents surrounding a hit-and-run accident.
What is important in the 7^(th) Education Curriculum is creative and critical questioning. Reflecting the historical situation and looking at the society with a positive or critical eye, students approach the theme through 'Kim,' 'Ahn' and 'A Man.' What is more, they get understanding of the work through the inner world of the characters and come closer to the times. First, learners examine Kim Seung-ok's 'The Winter of Seoul in 1964' by associating the inner world of the three characters with the times. In addition, the value of the novel is determined from learners' viewpoint.
Learner-centered teaching is based on group activities. Examples of group activities are team interview, group discussion, novel-related map making, scrapping, peer group making, grouping of students with the same idea, etc. This study considers examples of teaching plan centering on 'The Winter of Seoul in 1964.'
Furthermore, as for assessment, this study examines the meanings and methods of assessment. Assessment is made based on processes necessary for learner-centered classes. This study executes individual assessment, group assessment and session assessment centering on formative evaluation and aggregate evaluation.
This study recognizes the importance of the function of a language, which is emphasized in cooperative learning, and promotes active communication among learners in class, aiming at the development of learners' ability to present. Furthermore, it makes it a rule for learners to have self-directed learning.
Teachers should perform their role as assistants, presenting programs and leading class in order to stimulate learners' interest in learning. Thus discussion-typed class is more beneficial to learners than lecture-typed one. For executing such classes, teachers must take an enthusiastic attitude toward education and learners must resolve in mind for self-education.
