이건창(李建昌) 글쓰기의 문제적 성격에 대하여 ― 김택영(金澤榮)이 산삭했던 산문의 분석을 중심으로 = A Study on the Problematic Character of I Konch'ang's Writing ― Focused on a Prose Analysis which was Modified by Kim T'aekyong

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이번에 성균관대학교 대동문화연구원에서는 그동안 학계에서 발굴해온 이건창 관계 문헌을 총망라하여 새로 『이건창 전집』을 펴내었다. 이건창의 문학 연구와 관련하여 『전집』에서 특히 주목되는 부분은 초고본 계열의 필사본들이다. 김택영이 편집하여 공간했던 『명미당집』과 초고본을 대조해 보면 편집 과정에서 상당수의 글들이 대거 산삭되었음을 알 수 있는데 이 글들의 성격을 규명하는 것이 학계의 시급한 숙제로 떠오르게 되었다.
이건창에 대한 기존의 일반적인 이미지를 떠올려 보면 ‘강직한 관료’, ‘문장으로 이름난 문인’, ‘시대를 아파하였던 우국문학의 실천자’ 등으로 압축할 수 있을 듯하다. 그런데 김택영이 산삭한 글들을 살펴보면 이러한 이미지와 어울리지 않는 내용이 많이 들어 있다. 선배 문인 학자들에 대한 날선 비판이 거침없고, 자신만의 개성적 문학을 열정적으로 모색하는 과정에서는 조선 문단의 지상명령과도 같았던 도문일치의 명제를 과감히 부정하기도 하였다. 나아가 성리학을 넘어서서 도교와 불교에 대해서도 그 진리성을 인정하는 태도를 보였다.
그런데 이건창의 이러한 ‘문제적’ 면모들이 방종이나 일탈로 흐르지 않았음은 『전집』의 모든 글들이 증명하고 있는 바이다. 이건창은 자신의 자유롭고 치열했던 문학적 고민을 자산으로 삼아 시대를 외면하지 않고 아프게 증언하는 문학으로 승화시켰다. 앞으로는 본고에서 검토한 이건창의 문제적 면모와 기존에 알려졌던 우국문학을 종합적으로 검토하는 논의가 이어져야할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This time, the Daedong institute for Korean Studies of Sungkyunkwan University published the complete works of I Konch'ang. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that there is part of the manuscript collection of the first-draft version related to literary researches of I Konch'ang. As contrasted with Myongmidangjip which was modified by Kim T'aekyong, the first-draft version was cut from a fair number of writings during the editing process. It is urgent for academia to investigate the character.
An existing image of I Konch'ang seems to summarize as an upright government official, a well-known writer, and a performer of patriotic literature. But, a close look at a revised text of Kim T'aekyong included contents of non-matching image. He criticized a senior literary scholar without a hitch, and strongly denied thesis of Tomunilch'i(道文一致) in the process of seeking individual literature. Furthermore, he recognized the truth of taoism and buddhism beyond neo-Confucianism.
However, the complete works of I Konch'ang proved that he did not deviate from standard such as the problematic aspect. I Konch'ang sublimated his anger and did write and testify to his free and fierce worry about literature without turning away from the times. In the future, these studies will continue to put together patriotic literature and problematic aspect.
