I'm sorry but I simlpy can't make money on these people ... the suffering is too great for me to cash in it.
Everybody wants a little bit of land, not much. Jus' somethin' that was his. Somethin' he could live on and there couldn't nobody him off it.
To a God Unknown, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath는 흙냄새가 물씬 풍겨나오는 작품들이다.
The Winter of Our Discontent To a God Unknown, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath에서 우리는 땅에 대한 갈증 및 애착, 농토를 소유하고 싶어 몸부림하는 농민의 절규를 피부로 느낄 수 있다.
As a matter of fact, agrarianism is closely associated with what was apparently one of the primary motives for the book, the desire to protest against the harsh inequities of the financial-industrial system that had brought chaos to America in the thirties. At times Steinbeck, with his curious combination of humanism and mysticism, seems to propose the substitution of agrarianism for industrialism as an antidote for what ailed the country.
Steinbeck was born and grew up in the small agricultural community of Salinas in the Salinas Valley California, U.S.A. His agrarian upbringing provided him the opportunity to know the working and living conditions of farmers. Through those early experiences he came to know the problems that plagued the farmer and that created the basic themes for his future writings. Steinbeck knew the miseries and frustrations for the landless farmer through his living experiences, His compassion for the itinerant and the marginal farmer immersed him in searching for ways to help them develop a decent and dignified life.
During the first half of the twentieth century, the results of industrial capitalism were complete. In that decade of this century America was struck down by two devastating events: economic and drought. Roth struck at the very heart of the farmer. The occurrances of these two events in a system of capitalistic - industrialization destroyed the family farm. The development of farm implements replaced the labor work of the farm. The small farmer could not sell his produce profitably, causing him to lose his farm. Finally, the drought of 1930's drove the farmer from much of the land. The evicted and wandering farmer joined the starvation lines of the factory worker. As economic recovery slowly evolved, the small farm lands were purchased by corporations, developing a system of absentee landlord.
It can be frequently seen in Steinbeck's works that the victimized farmer possessed so strong a passion for the land that they tended to identify themselves with the soil. All of the landless farmers cherished the dream of a little farm of their own where they could grow their own crops, and nobody could evict them. The farmer wanted a stable and fruitful life on his own land. It was Stein beck's hope that the farmer could realize his dream.
The unbreakable bond between man and soil is minutely revealed in To a God Unknown, whose protagonist Joseph shows passionately his caring for this bond. His only aim in life is to make the soil fertile and productive. In these terms, only those who can personally take care of the soil should be entitled to possess their own land, to sow and to tender their crops, and to harvest their fruits.
The disruption of the relation between man and soil has invited heart-breaking tragedy to the farmer. The Grapes of Wrath deals with consequencies of the breaking of that bond. The basic reason for his disruption comes from the industrialization of farming. The morbid growth of commercial and industrial exploitation of the land spells the end of the farmer's simple ideals, whose typical examples we can see vividly in of Mice and Men. Owning a plot of land, a cow and a few chickens is a dream of nearly all farmer from American's pioneering days.
Financial-industrial society has eventually encouraged moral and cultural aridity, ever when successful in terms of production. Man becomes egoistic, mean, and profit-oriented. The dishonesty of business, the inhuman and unproductive nature of man -- all kinds of these immoralities are thriving in our age of industrialism. It seems to me that Steinbeck proposed the substitution of agrarianism for industrialism as an antedote against the deterioration of human nature. Close contact with land makes and keeps man pure. It seems true that the corruption of agricultural people can rarely be found in our history. Farmers, drawing spiritual strength as well as sustenance from the soil, are much more productive and healthier members of society compared with city dweller.
Our Korean society is now involved in rapid industrialization. Nothing can keep Korea from becoming an industrialized nation. Farming people are moving to the big industrial complexes in great numbers. They are contaminated with evils of industrialism. Steinbeck contends that to cure the pernicious evils of financial-industrial society, man should return to nature - to the soil. It is very worthwhile at this juncture that we, living in our sophisticated society where individualism is rampant and mutual trust is drying up everyday, should remember once again the invaluable lessons Steinbeck gives us through his works.
