피카레스크小說의 二元的 性格 : 『水滸傳』과 『찜플리치씨무스의 모험』을 중심으로 = A Study on Dualism of Picaresque Novel Appearing in The Water Margin and Der Abenteuerliche Simplicissimus

The purpose of this paper lies in making clear, through The Water Margin and the Adventures of a Simpleton, the fact that the picaresque novel mirrors not only a country in decline, poverty-stricken, morally corrupt, and therefore the breeding-ground of beggars and delinquents, but also, or rather, shows as ultimate moral intention of a human character who develops criminal instincts inherent in his nature after encountering an unfavorable environment.
In the past, the society the novel portrays was emphasized more than the individual character it presented as protagonist since the novel was born out of prevailing social conditions. It was asserted that the picaro, a product of corrupt society, forms delinquent habits from necessity which does not have anything to do with his nature; and since the picaro has no moral interest, he can be directed even to the summit of hypocrisy.
This harsh realism and moral commentary form dualism of the picaresque genre, and the dual qualities appear clearly both in The Water Margin and Simplicissimus. The attribution of The Water Margin to the picaresque genre has long been attempted but has not yet accepted by academic circles. This is largely due to its strong affinity with the Chinese knighterrantry novels as well as to the non-establishment of the picaresque genre in Chinese literary history. However, the novel should be fully admitted to the genre in the sense that its heroes essentially show criminal instincts, develop nature in full range after being fanned by societal disorders and finally undergo moral conversion. Simplicissimus has not received great attention in past studies of the picaresque genre, but the novel presents a vivid description of deliberate pride which is the very motive for delinquencies more satisfactorily than any other works of this genre. In Simplicissimus, unlike in The Water Margin, the delinquency does not lead to cruel bleeding and the emphasis lies in the psychological insight probing the inner, deep-seated motive for delinquency. The Water Margin exerts a greater impression by the fact that the heroes attain the climax of loyalty which is the common, ultimate, moral goal of all members of society, after overcoming various difficulties. On the other hand, Simplicissimus feels satisfaction only with eremitical solitude away from human life.
