As we have seen above, Kundera's first novel, The Joke is a complex work which has a lot of motives, and develops on various interrelated levels to present an encompassing vision of the human condition in the two decades after the 1948 Communist coup. Narrated through the monologues and recollections of four characters, Ludvik, Helena, Jaroslav, and Kostka, the novel traces the changing and problematic confluence of these value systems.
The story of The Joke is narrated by four protagonists. The main narrator, Jan Ludvik, is the most important protagonist of the novel. Three secondary narrators, Helena, Jaroslav, and Kostka all have a close relationship to Ludvik. Helena as his victim, Jaroslav as his old classmate, Kostka as his friend and ideological antagonist. Another important character related to Ludvik is Lucie, but she is only viewed by others, Ludvik and Kostka. In the plot construction of The Joke, Lucie assumes the role of the mystery. She is the “goddess of escape” and “poetry” by her role in Ludvik's personal tragedy.
Although the stories of all secondary narrators are outlined in the novel, the action of the novel centers on the story of the Ludvik. Coming from a small town in southern Moravia, he becomes a political activist during university days in Prague in the early 1950s. However, a political joke, “Optimism is the opium of the people! A healthy atmosphere stinks of stupidity! Long live Trotsky!” he wrote to his lover Marketa casually is taken seriously by his naive lover and other fanatic communist students. His former comrade, students' leader Zemanek is instrumental in Ludvik's expulsion from the party and from the university. Consequently, Ludvik is drafted into penal battalion to serve in the mines of Ostrava and later to prison. In Ostrava, he experiences a tragic love affair with Lucie. Mistreated horribly by the Communists, Ludvik in turn attempts physically to force Lucia, a young, sensitive, melancholy woman he comes to love, to have sex with him.
After fifteen years later, he is rehabilitated, but he never gives up his plan for revenge on Zemanek. He wants to carry out this revenge by seducing Zemanek's wife, Helena, during a visit to his Moravian hometown where the Ride of the Kings is performed. But this revenge turns into an absurd joke like the earlier joke. Helena confesses that she will divorce Zemanek who has a young student as a mistress. In both cases of Ludvik's relationship with women, he is described as a sadist and women are as victims, Helena even as a masochist.
The downfall of Ludvik, who does not know forgiveness which is observed by Kostka who believes in Christian love and knows forgiveness, coincides with that of his old friend Jaroslav, who has built a whole career on exploiting the folklore of the Moravian countryside. Like Ludvik and Helena, he too is a victim of his own myth. Years of falsification and self-deception have cut him off from genuine understanding even his own family. Having deceived others, Jaroslav is deceived himself and discovers that a trick has been played; his son Vladimir had contemptuously rejected the masked King in the Ride of the Kings in which his family had taken as a King from tradition. A blinding quarrel with his wife ends in Jarosalv smashing up the household which had been the center of his life. Here again we witness violent male behavior and a victimizing woman.
The main themes of the novel are the Joke that History commits on Man, revenge, forgetting, identity and the crisis of language. The motive of one's native land, extremely dear to Kundera, reappears at the end of the novel, when everything is collapsing around the main character. The motif of sexual revenge in The Joke has been questioned by some critics. They have wondered whether it is actually possible to make love to someone as an expression of hatred.
In a word the art of novel of the polyphonic narrative technic which Kundera used in The Joke gives
