早期 英語敎育을 위한 兒童文學 活用硏究 = Childern's Literature in Early EFL Acquisition Activity

Korea had sizzled with the issue of intorducing English to the elementary school children since late 1970s. The hot debate resulted in the introduction of FLES(Foreign Lanauage in Elementary School). Program as an extra-curriculum activity in 1982, just two years before the Seoul Asian Games and six years before the 88 Seoul Olympiad. The two big events has made us perceive the importance of the international language, English, more than ever. However, with the colsing the world events the exciting curiosity about FLES Program has cooled down slowly inside the school, and attracted interest outside the school instead.
From the staring point the FLES Program has some attendant problems of supplying qualified teachers, texts, teacher training programs, syllabus design, teaching methodology, teaching equipment and materials. This essay tries to solve those problems and provide some practical ideas on teaching children English using folk tales(Marchen or fairytales). Fairytales have been a neglected area of study in most schools, colleges and universities, usually owing to the thought of as being childish. They embody some of the deepest, finest, and universal elements in world literature in simple, direct language and style. A proper consideration of them would be an important contribution to the early EFL acquisition activity.
The writer enumerates theoretical background to select children's literature in accordance with child development stages. She also argues representative approaches which has appeared in the 20th century. No single approache is the best, all are potentially successful. However, folktales go well with the Natural Approach. As children are familiar with most of fairytales in their natvie tongue, simply adopted stories in English are best for the 'understandable input' materials and communicative materials as well for Early EFL acqusition activities. Lastly this essay suggests model classroom activities with a Russian folk tales and the way of simplifying fairytales.
