The Korean word ‘Puri’ literally means ‘untying’ or ‘unlacing’ something such as strings or shoelaces. It is also used frequently to mean ‘releasing’ or ‘easing’ someone’s anger, sorrow or tension, and also for ‘solving’ interpersonal problems. It is a term that we often see in Korean culture. Especially in the field of traditional performing arts. Particularly in Gut(shamanic ritual or village festival), there are many words including Puri such as ‘Sal-puri’, ‘Nok-puri’, ‘Bon-puri’, ‘Seongjoo-puri’ which are the titles of the ritual process, names of ritual songs or rhythms. It suggests that ‘Puri’ is an essential key word to understand the world of Gut. There have been a number of analyses on ‘Han’(sorrow, regret) or ‘Sinmeong’(fun) in order to explain the spiritual aspects of Korean culture but little research on the actual action of Puri that releases this ‘Han’ and ‘Sinmeong’. This paper examines the meaning of the idea of ‘Puri’ through sorting the various verbal expressions about ‘Puri’ and discussing how they appear in traditional village festivals and in the classrooms where young people learn Pungmul-gut(Nong-ak) these days. The results of this discussion are as follows.
The first section focuses on the verbal expressions about ‘Puri’ and examines their meanings and the usages by classifying them into four groups: the transitive verb ‘Pulda’, the intransitive verb ‘Pullida’, the noun ‘Puri’, and the phrases including the Chinese character ‘He(解)’ that has almost the same meaning as ‘Puri’. Through this analysis it became apparent that these words have extremely variable meanings and wide usages. In particular, Korean people often use the verb ‘Pulda’ when they ‘solve’ the interpersonal problems or emotions such as anger, stress or tension. While the Japanese language is very similar to Korean and also has the verbs ‘Hodoku’ or ‘Toku’ which have similar meanings to ‘Pulda’, these verbs are not used for interpersonal relationships or for emotions such as anger. It shows that the idea of ‘Puri’ or ‘Pullda’ is very unique to the Korean language and that these verbal expressions make Korean people tend to feel strongly that they need to release anger, regret or some feelings in order to solve interpersonal problems. This idea seems to have a profound effect on Korean traditional music and Gut rituals.
The second section surveys how the idea of ‘Puri’ appears in traditional Mauel-gut (village festivals) among various Gut culture in Korea. The view of ‘Puri’ seems to have a strong influence on the purposes and the methods of Mauel-gut. One of the main purposes of Mauel-gut may be to release the emotions of the protective deities or ancestral deities of villages and families and this purpose would be classified as ‘ritual Puri’. The other purpose can be named as ‘social Puri’ that is used to resolve ‘Han’ (anger, regret, or sorrow) of the people who are living in a single village and make the union stronger.
In order to realize this, people use various and effective ‘Puri’ methods and devices in Mauel-gut. One of the typical examples of these methods may be playing Pungmul music with dancing and spinning together in a circle. If the artistic expression of Pungmul were seen in detail, you would find ‘musical Puri’ in it. Since the transformation of various rhythms is the main method of expression in Pungmul music, it is thought that the expression of ‘Mekko- Pulda’ (literally meaning ‘tying and untying rhythms’) is most important for organizing this music. Besides musical Puri, there is also physical Puri, such as ‘dancing Puri’ or ‘Jin Puri’(formation changes). In Pungmul music, people share their Sinmyeong(fun) within their body and release their Han(sorrow, etc.) by using these artistic e...
