This study analyzes the aspect of the interaction between preschool children and parents and the meaning of narrative interaction between them as they take forest art activities. The aim of this study is to provide data that contributes in improving positive interaction between preschool children and their parents through deep understanding of their interaction during forest art activities.
The features of art activity using natural object with forest experience are quite different from those using artificial object indoors. Therefore, this study observed changes in interaction between preschool children and their parents, through free and uncontrived forest experience as their environment changes. Also, interaction between preschool children and their parents and the meaning of forest art activities in their interaction through various uncontrived forest art activities have been investigated. Main subjects of this study are: First, how does interaction between preschool child and their parents manifest itself? Second, what is the meaning of narrative of forest art activities in their interaction?
Ten pairs of preschool children with one of their parents living in Daejeon and its surrounding areas have been chosen as subjects for this study. With the subjects’ consent, their interviews have been recorded, transcribed, coded, categorized, and their meaning analyzed.
The following are the results of this study.
1) Experience of interaction between preschool children and their parents manifesting itself in forest art activities.
First, preschool children and their parents started conversation about small things like flowers, as they were naturally getting familiar with forest. They started feeling empathy for each other in their continuous conversations and their conversations became more animated. In this process, they could enjoy every minute together through flowers as playthings that revealed their common interest.
Second, through vis-à-vis conversation and by talking to each other from the other’s viewpoint, they were together during the forest art activities as friends. The parents could feel that their children were opening their mind and could heal their children’s wounded heart that didn’t know before.
Third, the parents were able to take a peek into their children’s mind when their children did not behave the way they wanted. Parents became aware that their interaction in the forest art activities were opportunities to take a load off their mind from their children. Also, the parents came to realize that their authoritative stance originated from their misguided desire towards well-being of their children, felt sorry and thankful for them, and tried to take their excessive mind off of their children.
Fourth, through forest art activities, the parents were able to admit the difference between themselves and their children and know that there are differences in the way of thought through accommodation and respect. The time they focused on each other in the forest art activities brought parents and child the value of ‘being together’.
Fifth, in the forest art activities, the parents and their children became vitamin of life as travel companions for each other. They were so happy being together in the forest art activities and had a unique unforgettable time together through one-on-one date with each other.
2) Meaning of forest art activities in terms of the interaction between pre- school children and their parents.
First, the parents gave their children various experiences, rather than knowledge. They helped their children make a playground for themselves in the classroom called nature. Also, the parents wanted their children to see the ever-changing nature and wanted them to enjoy the given time for themselves. It was shown that parents wanted their children to live along with the nature, at the pace of the nature, according to the old adage ‘百聞而 不如一見 (Seeing is Believing)’ from now on at least.
Second, the parents were regretful that there were so little time to spend doing the forest art activities together with their children in the precious space of woodland, so they made the memories of their activities with their children a ‘special event’. These activities gave the parents chances to get closer with their children and made them able to wait for their children and patiently watch over them.
Third, the parents felt sorry that their children had to be so busy every day, so they invited their children to ‘restfulness’. The parents wanted their children to grow to be happy children. The parents and their children have been healed by just being in the forest, through pleasure from restfulness and feeling small happiness in daily life.
Fourth, the parents gave their children chances to learn the wisdom of life. The parents wanted their children to develop the ability to find things out by themselves and to let their inner maturity to grow up. Also, it was shown that the parents wanted the forest art activities to become resources that could comfort their children as a ‘compass of life’ when they grow up to be adults and have to bear the weight of their lives.
In summary, this study helped increasing positive interaction between the parents and their children with the interaction between them in forest art activities offering the children diverse experiences through thorough observation and examination as the children utilizes all of their senses. Also, it became apparent that as the parents, who contributes to whole growth and development of their children, walk through the woods together with their children and enjoy the changes, the emotional stability of the parents extended to become positive emotion of their children.
