This study investigated the retirement life experiences of retirees who receive public pensions such as national pension and special occupational pension, their satisfaction with retired, and the degree of importance of six major areas: health, interpersonal relationships, leisure, housing, social activities/work, and financial management. Also, based on the retirees' own experiences, we investigated the extent to which pre-retirees thought they needed to prepare in advance and compared the results by gender, type of public pension, and time since retirement. The main research results are as follows: First, more than half of the respondents responded that the level of living expenses after retirement was similar to what they expected. More retirees said they were spending less than before retirement than those who said they were spending more than before retirement. Items on which more money was spent than expected were medical, congratulatory and condolence allowance, food, and travel, while clothing, transportation, education, and self-development were items on which less money was spent than expected. Second, respondents were asked to answer the extent to which they thought the six areas listed above were important in retirement, in percentage terms with the total adding up to 100%. Health was rated 44.4%, residential life 15.3%, leisure life 12.1%, interpersonal relationships 11.3%, financial management 10.3%, and social activities/work 6.6%. Third, the subjective happiness and retirement life satisfaction of retirees receiving public pensions were both about 3.6 points out of 5 points. However, there were differences in the impact of satisfaction on the six areas and the size of retirement funds. Leisure and health were found to affect both subjective happiness and overall satisfaction with retirement life, but interpersonal relationships and financial management only had an effect on subjective happiness, and housing had a significant effect only on overall satisfaction with retirement life. In particular, the amount of retirement funds had a positive effect on satisfaction with retirement life, but did not affect subjective happiness. This meant that the higher the retirement funds, the higher the satisfaction with retirement life, but the amount of retirement funds did not determine the level of happiness. Fourth, retirees recognized the need for pre-retirees to prepare themselves for retirement in the six areas listed above.
Overall, women were slightly more likely than men to think that occupational pensions were more necessary than national pensions. In addition, there was no significant difference depending on the retirement period, but the group that had been retirees for longer had a higher awareness of the need for disease management, medical cost preparation, relationship with children, residential housing utilization plans, residential environment, and housing affordability.
