The notion and institution of 'museum' as we now know of were established in the late 18th century when it was proclaimed belonging to people and made public, no more considered as an exclusive property of the privileged few, e.g. well-heeled individuals or an absolute monarchy. Museums, since then, have been an extremely modern space with the new political value of 'people or nation' on its fade. They are a space in which a society's memories are created and such memories bolster the imaginative communities of modern nation states while setting up their cultural identities. Identity, however, is in line with a reorganization of the past from today's perspective. In order to find out the meaning museums intend to deliver, that is, how museums make up identity, it should be noted that they are an installation of meaning creation.
During the country's modernization process, the institutional device of museum contributed to churning out subordinate, politically obedient individuals rather than infusing them with democracy and autonomy. Museums developed in a way that binds 'me' of the present to the past via remains of the past while subjugating individuals in the national, ethnic origin. That means museums turned themselves into a channel through which nationalism is altered into and transmitted as a type of dogma or myth. This mechanism, then, turned absolute and standardized by shrouding itself. Thus, museums' universal intention of forming a nationalistic identity demands increasing ritual practices, generating blind consumption and communication on the level of education, social system and daily life.
nationalism cannot but operate in conjunction with bodies of rules like 'historical sciences' or 'education' as it is no self-reliant or self-completed ideology. Also, due to its lack of materialistic basis for energy generation, nationalism makes a being that strongly evidences itself via absence. In that context, it might be safer to say that museums have a greater meaning as an educational institution based on history, tradition and ethnic legitimacy rather than on the cognitive identity of 'nationalism.'
We can know that nationalistic practices by museums, in this way, become ritual via appreciation of exhibits. This study borrows Arnold van Gennep's 'rite of passage' and Victor Witter Turner's 'communitas' theory concerning the 'ritual' interpretation practiced in a museum by the experience of 'liminality'. The rite of passage to appreciate a museum's exhibits is divided into the pre-visit 'rite of separation,' the 'rite of transition' during appreciation and the after-appreciation 'rite of aggregation.' In addition, spectators carry out such rites of passage throughout their life by repeating acts of appreciation. It means that a spectator's identity is established not by just one time of participation but by repetition of appreciations through out his or her entire life. Meanwhile, an interpretation based on the 'communitas' theory can be drawn in that the self-consciousness of the original identity 'nation' materialized in a museum for each spectator has the power of binding a group. Museums, though guiding spectators within the bounds of universal consciousness, its symbolic significance as a vessel containing cultural gems and inheriting tradition solidifies people through a trans-hierarchical ideology and, to a greater extent, sets social and structural reproduction in concrete.
This study discusses the formation of nationalistic identity based on museums' own symbolism among the various practices carried out by spectators in a museum. It also posits that such appreciation of exhibits fulfills its role reproducing a community's members and advancing its structure as a social apparatus. The study, however, can have some limitations in that spectators' practice can't be said entirely concentrated upon 'nationalism' and that it only takes into consideration those spectators with the greatest enthusiasm in visiting museums, even though each individual in varying fields, classes and generations could have a wide variety of recognitions.
