2000년대 이후 일본문학에 나타난 한국인 표상: 한국인 등장인물의 (비)한국성 = Representation of Koreans in Japanese Literature since the 2000s: (Un)Koreanness of Korean Characters

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay examines how Koreans are represented in Japanese literature after the 2000s. During this period, Korea and Koreans, which existed as different cultures and the ‘othered,’ entered the more ordinary landscape of Japanese society with the active exchanges of popular culture and high interests in Korean culture. First, in the works of young writers such as Noritoshi Furuichi and Ryo Asai, I examined how Korean characters appeared as part of the daily lives of the younger generation of Japanese, both inside and outside Japan. In such works, Korean characters are not portrayed to represent a specific Korean character. In works such as Living in Search of a Reason to Die, the image of fictional Korean youth appears as a close other who can be easily imagined as an alternative to the occluded life of young Japanese people. On the other hand, through the works of Tomoyuki Hoshino and Keiichiro Hirano, it was confirmed that ‘Zainichi’ Koreans residing in Japan naturally appear in the works of Japanese writers as one of the minorities that make up Japanese society. Characters such as Lee Hwa in The Deceived and Kido in A Man are characters with various conflicts in addition to their ethnic identity. Ushio Fukazawa’s Green and Red, analyzed in the latter part of this essay, deals with the protagonist who feels confused about how she does not belong anywhere between the two identities of Korean and Japanese. This work takes the popularity of the K-wave and the hate demonstration against Koreans as important backgrounds, and shows that Koreans and Japanese should relate to each other as individual human beings rather than as a uniformed group. In addition, while this work is critical to the image of Koreans produced by the media, it also creates a specific Korean personality as it draws characters who are struggling at the boundary between Koreans and Japanese. The culturally identifiable Korean character is also combined with anxiety about discrimination. In fact, in some of the works that this paper deals with, such anxiety could be read in common. In conclusion, works featuring Korean characters with diverse personalities that cannot be encompassed by the identity of a Korean may serve as a small clue to counter chauvinism, by imagining a world in which Koreansnaturally exist and be presented in literature.
