ABSTRACTThe Rainbow shows Lawrence's dualism in three aspects. First, it is
expressed in the relation between man and woman. Second, in the individual and the society. Finally in the structure which can be divided into two parts, the mythic form and historical form.D. H. Lawrence was most interested in the relation between man and
woman, He regarded it as the most fundamental element of life. So, The
Rainbow deals with three types of relationships between man and woman
through three generations. Each couple has dualistic future between them.
Man's chief essence is darkness which is a major principle of female.
On the other hand woman's chief essence is lightness which is that of
male. Man has strong blood-intimacy and woman the desire of the enlarge-
ment of range of being.Tom and Lydia, the first generation, living in a traditional society, enjoy
the most successful marriage among the three generations. Their marriage
is firmly based on Tom's blood-intimacy and Lydia's intellect. Tom provides a stable and comfortable home and love, while Lydia gives him a new understanding of the meaning of life, They achieve the ideal state
of balance between their dualistic features.Anna and Will, the second generation, still living in the tradition, are
less successful in marriage than Tom and Lydia because of the new demensions of life according to the gradual invasion of industrialism. The marriage of Anna and Will shows a gradual reversal of the initial roles, so that
Will is tame and conventional while his wife becomes his keeper. In the
end, they no longer meet at soul-level, being absorbed only in their bodies.Ursula, the third generation, living in a modern society, loves Anton
Skrebensky, but she has to cast him off owing to his imprisoning concept
of love and his blind obedience to the army and nation. Ursula's breaking
from Anton signifies the impossibility of balance between man and woman.
And now the problem turns from the relation between man and woman
to the individual and the society which is civilized by industrialism and
capitalism.
