The Waste Land의 解體論的 접근 : 再創造를 위한 解體 Deconstruction for reconstruction = A Deconstructive Approach to The Waste Land
This dissertation is an attempt to reread of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land from a perspective of Deconstruction.
Deconstruction could, as it were, defer the consquences of this stance by enabling theorists to argue that 'literature' always subverted the inventions of its authors by reinstating that which the author had sought to exclude. But this sort of oppositional reading made sense-at least to its exponents-only while theory remained at the margin.
As the reading theorists began to assume distinguished chairs, and control of departments, its subversive air was bound to fade. The argument that canonical texts, though complicit with every form of oppression, nevertheless managed to smuggle in the point of view of the oppressed, was bound to seen an increasingly convoluted mode of attack on the oppressors, and literature an increasingly redundant vehicle for the purpose.
Deconstructionists often condemn the old New Criticism as a repressive, fomalist ideology which inhibited the free play of reading. whereas in fact mainstream New Critical theory exerted virtually no constraint upon interpretation the agreed constraints had to be smuggled in from outside. All that the most through going contextual criticism can do is some broad and hazy boundaries around the reading of literary works-and then only on the premise that the task is to try to locate the work in its historical and biographical context. Once that premise is discarded, texts become mirrors in which interpreters see their own reflections plain.
The Waste Land juxtaposes different pieces. So. as we read the poem, certain themes, motifs, tones, and even characters begin to develop through repetitions, echoes, and similarities. As in an inaudible voice the main tune or pattren of notes is hinted at, elaborated on, and returned to; so, the central concerns of the poem impress themselves on the reader's mind.
And through all parts of The Waste Land Eliot demonstrates the theme of the waste land, drawing on religion, mythology, literature, music, and someone's experiences, and the city and its significance and fusing these into a concept of death.
The Waste Land has no narrative and no unifying central character even though Eliot in his Notes clarifies that Tiresias unifies the diverse characters. There is only a heap of broken death images and inaudible voices. They are a perfect whole, in which Eliot, like the God of recreation, is everywhere present and nowhere visible. We come which a striking distance of the opposite conclusion that the unifying consciousness is not Eliot's but the reader's.
With the last of The Waste Land, Eliot abandons poetry as a broken vehicle of his fight for a vision of unity. Eliot's last great poem proclaims the death of language and time and space, and stands as a commitment to his search for a universal text by way of deconstruction for reconstruction.
