The chinese had dyed linen the red colour with the red mineral powder in the Neolithic era.
The first record of chinese dyeing was the pictograph which was excavated in Eun Hea.
These were the record of Zhou Dynasty dyeing. The letters of the pictograph meant that they could dye the cloth five colours. The character of fabric dyeing of Zhou Dynesty was that they had used the plant dyeing, the mineral dyeing developed, practiced the work to dye the fabric that they distinguish in accordiance with each season, and they had dyed several times the plant dye. Except the Fabric dyeing, they directly drew on the cloth with the plant natural dye. In Zhou Dynasty, they considered as low class colour the black, but did as high class colour the yellow and red colour.
The character of Choon Choo Zaen Kook Dynasty was Indigo plant dyeing method.
In Jin and Han Dynasty, the fabric Dyeing technic reached the high level.
In Eastern Han, Indigo dyeing was prevalent and in Western Han, they dyed the red colour with safflower, also used black plant dye.
In the beginning of Han Dynasty, they respected the black and red colour together, but according to a theory "五德相勝", they respected the yellow colour.
In Wei Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasty, Nam Kung was famous for the black fabric dyeing.
The quality of the black silk fabric was excellent and the low class colour not take it, but the high class could take it.
In Sui Dynasty, the fabric dyeing was not developed.
In Dang Dynasty, on account of the great production of silk fabric, it's silt fabric dyeing was famous. Because of their respect for the yellow colour of the Emperor, the yellow colour was generally prevalent.
In Song Dynasty, on the base of Dang Dynasty the fabric dyeing of Song Dynasty was developed very much. The prohibition of colour was the yellow colour that the Emperor only could use it.
In Ming Dynasty, there were various fabric dyeing method. There were many kind of plant dyeing what called "蘇木, 黃丹, 梔子, 槐花, 鳥梅, 紫木, 천초, 靑藍" etc.
The development of fabric dyeing had influenced the colour costume system of Chinese.
It had need for the purpose of class discrimination.
