경도 지적장애 성인의 은유 이해능력 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 경도 지적장애 성인 집단을 대상으로 개념영역(지각적 은유, 심리적 은유), 구문구조(서술적 은유, 비례적 은유)에 따른 은유 이해능력과 오류특성을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구를 위해 언어연령이 9~12세에 해당하는 경도 지적장애 성인 15명, 이들과 선별검사로 언어연령을 일치시킨 일반 학생 15명을 대상으로 개념영역과 구문구조에 따른 은유 문장이 들어간 대화 문맥을 제시하고, 은유 문장의 은유적 해석을 보기에서 선택하도록 하였다. 보기 문항은 은유적 해석, 문자적 해석, 문맥적 해석, 관련 없는 해석으로 구성하였다.

본 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 개념영역에 따른 은유 이해 수행력에서 경도 지적장애 성인 집단은 일반 학생 집단보다 지각적 은유와 심리적 은유 모두에서 유의하게 낮은 수행력을 나타냈다. 또한 경도 지적장애 성인 집단은 지각적 은유가 심리적 은유의 수행력보다 높게 나타났으나, 일반 학생 집단은 경도 지적장애 성인 집단에 비해 지각적 은유와 심리적 은유 간 수행력의 차이가 나타나지 않았다.
둘째, 구문구조에 따른 은유 이해 수행력에서 경도 지적장애 성인 집단은 일반 학생 집단보다 서술적 은유와 비례적 은유 모두에서 유의하게 낮은 수행력을 나타냈다. 또한 경도 지적장애 성인과 일반 학생 집단은 모두 서술적 은유와 비례적 은유에서 수행력의 차이가 나타나지 않았다.
셋째, 집단별 오류유형 특성을 살펴보면, 경도 지적장애 성인 집단은 오류유형에서 문자적 해석을 가장 높게 선택했으며, 그다음으로 문맥적 해석, 관련 없는 해석 순으로 선택했다. 일반 학생 집단은 오류유형에서 문맥적 해석을 가장 높게 선택했으며, 그다음으로 관련 없는 해석, 문자적 해석 순으로 선택했다.
위와 같은 결과를 종합해볼 때, 경도 지적장애 성인들은 언어연령을 일치시킨 일반 학생들 보다 은유 이해능력이 유의미하게 낮다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 경도 지적장애 성인들은 개념영역에 따른 은유에서 지각적 은유 수행력이 심리적 은유 수행력보다 높으며, 구문구조에 따른 은유에서 서술적 은유와 비례적 은유의 수행력이 차이가 없음을 알 수 있었다. 은유 이해 오류유형에 있어서 경도 지적장애 성인들은 일반 학생들이 문맥적 해석을 선호한 것과 달리 문자적 해석을 가장 선호하였다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
따라서 경도 지적장애 성인을 대상으로 은유와 같은 비유 언어 중재 시 이러한 특성들을 고려하여 교육 및 치료적 접근에 활용한다면, 이들의 의사소통능력을 향상시켜 전반적인 삶의 질 향상에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate metaphor understanding ability and error characteristics according to concept domain (perceptual metaphor, psychological metaphor) and syntactic structure (predicative metaphor, proportional metaphor) of adults with mild intellectual disability. For the study, 15 adults with mild Intellectual Disability whose language age ranged from 9 to 12 years, and 15 Typically Developing students(TD) who matched language age by screening test were selected. The researcher presented the dialogue context with metaphor sentences according to the concept domain and the syntactic structure, and the participants selected the metaphorical interpretation of the metaphorical sentence in the interpretations. The interpretations consisted of metaphorical, literal, contextual, and irrelevant interpretations.

The results of the study are as follows:
First, adult group with mild intellectual disability showed significantly lower performance in both perceptual metaphor and psychological metaphor than TD group in the metaphor comprehension ability according to concept domain. In addition, the perceptual metaphor of the adult group with mild intellectual disability was higher than that of the psychological metaphor, but the TD group showed little difference in performance between the perceptual metaphor and the psychological metaphor than the adult group with mild intellectual disability.
Second, adult group with mild intellectual disability showed significantly lower performance in both predicative metaphor and proportional metaphor than TD group in the metaphorical comprehension ability according to the syntactic structure. adult group with mild intellectual and TD group were no significant difference in performance between predicative metaphor and proportional metaphor.
Third, as for the error characteristics, the adult group with mild intellectual disability selected ‘literal interpretations’ the most in the error type, followed by ‘contextual interpretation’ and ‘irrelevant interpretation’, The TD group selected ‘contextual interpretation’ the most in the error type, followed by ‘unrelated interpretation’ and ‘literal interpretation’.
The results of this study revealed that adults with mild intellectual disability have significantly lower metaphor comprehension ability than students with language age matched. Also, adults with mild intellectual disability showed higher perceptual metaphorical performance in metaphor according to concept domain than psychological metaphorical performance, and there was no difference in performance between predicative metaphor and proportional metaphor in metaphor according to syntactic structure. In the metaphorical error type, adults with mild intellectual disability were more likely to prefer the literal interpretation than the TD students preferred the contextual interpretation.
Therefore, when educating metaphor for adults with mild intellectual disability, educating them in consideration of these characteristics will contribute to improving their overall quality of life by improving their communication skills.
