서원과 이학의 일원화 = The unification of Seowon(書院) and Metaphysics(理學)

The unification of Seowon(書院) and Metaphysics(理學) is the most distinctive feature in the development of Seowon during the era of South-Song(南宋). Seowon movement initiated by the group of metaphysic scholars led Metaphysics to be in harmony with each other in their forms and contents, and be interdependent on each other, froming the structure of inside and outside. Seowon was a stronghold of Metaphysics, Metaphysics was mind of Seowon. Moreover, Seowon and Metaphysics shared the common destiny of the rise and fall, sadness and pleasure. That is to say, during the reign of King Young-Jong Seowon and Metaphysics went through a great suffering, but Young-Jong reversed his position turning in favor of Seowon. Metaphysics. And, the suffering in the year Kyungwon(慶元) turned into a blessing for Seowon and Metaphysics to pervade deeply into each other and concentrate their capability, which would bring about a great prosperity in the subsequent generations.
The unification trend of Seowon and Metaphysics served as a basis for the theory that if one comes into prosperity, the other one into prosperity, and if one starts ts fall, the other one share the same, which means the rise and fall, things known and unknown come into existence in common. Moreover, it is possible to observe their forms and find out their trace. Out of 4 issues. seowon complex of metaphysics scholars, the relationship between scholars, schools and Seowon, Metaphysics philosophy realized by lectures in Seowon, systematization in which Seowon and Metaphysics came in lump - the last issue will be explained in detail in the next thesis due to its intimate relations whith the systematization of Seowon.
First, they were absorbed in the lecture activity in Seowon, but pupils in Yook-Moon(陸門) also put their energy on the establishment of Seowon.
Second, the major works of Joo-Hee were all completed in Seowon which he founded, which shows that Joo-Hee already saw Seowon as the basis of mind and the space of Metaphysics scholars, the ultimate destination of life.
Third, the obsession with Bakrokdong- Seowon(白鹿洞書院) went up to the abnormal degree.
