The Sewol ferry disaster, which occurred in April 2014, is one of the defining events in the history of the Korean church. Some speak of this tragedy as an event of the times, along with the May 18, 1980, Gwangju Movement. And this tragedy did not end there, but led to the Stellar Daisy disaster, the Itaewon disaster, etc., and there is a distinction because the Christians of the “Sewol generation” took the lead in mourning in solidarity with the tragedy that continued after the Sewol ferry disaster, calling for the truth to be clarified, and so on.
This researcher believes that theology is divided into “theology before the Sewol ferry disaster” and “theology after the Sewol ferry disaster.” Even before the Sewol ferry disaster, there were many social disasters, such as the Sampoong department store collapse disaster, the Seongsu Bridge collapse disaster, and the Daegu subway fire disaster, but starting with the Sewol ferry disaster, theologians theologized the disaster.
The approach is like that of the West and the United States, which remember, interpret, and mourn the Holocaust and the 911 attacks. The Sewol ferry disaster, which was a huge event in the modern history of Korea as well as in the history of the Korean church, must be recalled to the people so that a social tragedy does not happen again, and the church must interpret its pain and suffering theologically. In the Christian tradition, the sacrament is a liturgy of remembrance.
Through the Christian sacrament, which recalls the suffering of the Jewish ancestors and the Exodus from Egypt and relates to the present-day Passover, Christians gather in space, eat and drink bread and wine, recall the sufferings of Jesus Christ, praise and give thanks to him, partake of his sufferings, and taste the table of the eschatological consummation of the kingdom of God.
Therefore, this paper will examine the three theological themes of space, lamentation, and the sacrament as a way of remembering the Sewol ferry disaster, with the primary purpose of examining its legacy, and exploring the possibilities of a new theology based on this. Lastly, focusing on these theological themes, the Church also vowed to “not forget” after the Sewol ferry disaster. I would like to suggest how to understand this theologically. Just as the sacrament is centered on Anamnesis and oriented to the past, when the sacrament is celebrated in remembrance of Jesus Christ through the sacrament, when it is celebrated in solidarity with them in the wake of the Sewol ferry disaster, and when it is sustained in our lives, we will never forget the hope for the transformation into a society that smells of the kingdom of God contained in our resolve and determination, “We will not forget.” Subjects: Sacrament, Sewol, Tragedy, Anamnesis, Remembrance, Christianity.
